Winter Sports Destinations: The Top Five

1. Whistler Blackcomb

This was originally two separate resorts, but the two were combined in 2003. The combined and fully integrated resort now covers an area of 8,171 hectares, making it the biggest winter sports resort in North America. There are more than 200 trails here, and it is to be the venue for the alpine events of the Winter Olympics in 2010. Skiing magazine has rated this resort at number one for the past 12 years.

2. Banff

There are three winter sports regions in Alberta: Lake Louise, Mount Norquay and Sunshine Village. Sunshine Village is 15 minutes away from Banff, and consists of three mountains, renowned for their ‘champagne powder’. Lake Louise is almost a further hour’s drive away, and is in a quiet, romantic mountain setting. People of all levels of expertise can enjoy their winter sports here, and it is an excellent choice for travel together with your family or friends. Mount Norquay resort has been in existence sin 1926, and is the place to go if you are looking for more challenging trails.

3. St. Anton

This is a famous winter sports destination in Austria, and was the venue for Alpine World Skiing in 2001. There are 260 km of pistes, and plenty of bars and pubs where you can relax between ski runs. If you are new to winter sports, there are plenty of teachers resident here to help you learn how to do it.

4. Chamonix

This is at the foot of Mont Blanc, and cable cars take you to the highest point which is at an elevation of 3,842 meters. You can reach the Aiguille du Midi using the cable car, from where diverse runs can be enjoyed, including Vallee Blanche, Les Planards, and Pas du Chevre.

5. Tignes

This is near the Val D’Isare in eastern France. Open to skiers and snowboarders all year round, this resort has the Grand Motte.
