Hawaii’s largest town is Kahului Maui, it’s surrounded by the mountains at the west and the Haleakala at the east. The Kahului Airport is located there and is central for visitors arriving in Maui. However the majority of people who arrive here don’t take the time to appreciate the natural beauty that abounds. They would usually just go on ahead to the resorts of Kihei Coast or West Maui which leaves not a lot of chance to explore the Central area of Maui unless they were heading home.
Being Hawaii’s biggest town, is is not surprising that Kahului is mainly a commercialized center and has it’s biggest mall situated within. The beautiful town of Wailuku which is nice place to visit and appreciate. To the west mountains along the slopes, you can see the various government buildings of the country where numerous historical churches, antique stores and good old fashioned restaurants that serve delicious Hawaiian cuisine that is sure to satisfy your appetite.
For those who enjoy going to museums, the Bailey House in Wailuku is filled with elaborate artworks, artifacts and periodical furnishings. Wailuku is also considered as a portal to Iao Valley. This place is considered sacred and also enchanting in the whole of Hawaii. At the center of the Iao Valley lies a stone pillar which majestically rises 1,200 feet to the air. Also known as the “Needle” which towers over the valley below.
On your way back from Iao Valley, take a trip to Heritage Gardens and the Kepaniwai Park which presents several features of gardens and buildings that represent the various cultures of Hawaii Island’s diverse group of immigrants.
When you’ve reached back to Wailuku, make a fast right turn on Route 30 and go to Ma’alaea towards to the south. Make sure you stop on over at Maui’s Tropical Plantation wherein you can view a 60- acre wide variety of fruit plantation. Get to know Maui’s rich agricultural nature and history. You’ll get to sample fresh natural fruits in all it’s tasty splendour. The flora and fauna here are also unique and can’t be found in any other plantation. For fruit lovers, this is a absolutely a place you won’t want to miss. The gift shops here are usually inexpensive and reasonable for the average visitor. Have a craving for Mauna Kea macadamia nuts? Well they have it here, plus a lot of other varieties.
The Ma’alaea District is located inside Central Maui which is about 6 miles turning south of Wailuku. For a quick dip and to relax this is the perfect spot. This is also where the Maui Ocean Center is found. This aquarium is Maui Hawaii’s modern attractions and as is very popular with tourists. As can be expexted, for animal lovers this place is fun filled place where one can experience the beauty of a variety of aquatic life in their natural habitat. You will also find the Ma’a'laea Harbor noted as the home to numerous snorkel cruise and whale watching boats. You can also fine dine with their exquisite restaurants and be captivated with the invigorating serenity.
