France Vacations – The Tourist’s Haven

The world’s capital of culture and the arts, of fine dining and wine, and of romance – France is all these and more. It is not surprising that France is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It is surrounded by Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. France has more or less 64 million people and over 500 kinds of cheese. No wonder they are cheesy.

Before embarking on a visit to France, it is best to know when the perfect time is. That of course depends on what you want to do there. If it is skiing, then you should be there during winter. The ski season runs between December and the middle of March. If you want to miss your fellow tourists crowding every corner, it is best to visit from April to June. The weather also is said to be best during these months because it is moderate especially in Paris. Summer is July and August. This is when you bump into foreigners like yourself. It is reassuring to see other people looking wonderfully lost in translation.

In visiting any country, it is wise to know as much of the language as you can. This holds true in France. Although the French people in cities can speak English, the same can not be said of those in the suburbs. Speaking the French language is tricky because it is not spoken the way it is written so it is advisable to write down basic phrases for greetings, directions, medical and dietary instructions if necessary. At least you can let them read if you can’t speak it properly.

When in France going around is not a problem. The French rail service is superb. A tourist can easily hop from city to city and town to town by rail. So unless you brought half of your closet, there is no need to rent a car or flag down a cab every time, both of which can be very expensive. It is highly advised to get a French rail pass if you plan to have more than a day of traveling or want to cover long distances via rail. It is much cheaper this way than getting French rail tickets from point to point.

If you are traveling on a budget or would like to save your money for souvenirs to remind you of your French trip, then it is wise to stay at a town nearby where you can stay in French cheap hotels. In France cheaper lodging does not mean uncomfortable and bad service. Sometimes it is nicer to stay at lower rated hotels than those a step higher. There are also vacation rentals which are much cheaper than hotels. This is advisable if you will be staying in a town for at least a week. Nothing beats a dining experience in France. So instead of dining in your hotel, run to a café and experience French dining. Have the prix fixe menu where you will be served a complete course – starter, main dish, and dessert. You can also have wine served at a lower price. It is much enjoyable and costs much less too. After being satisfied, you still have change for tipping and you’ll appear generous.

If by chance you get invited to dinner, there are things you need to observe that are the opposite of what you know. Of course being punctual is a must and do not sit down before your host does. Wait to be seated and for the host to signal the start of the meal. Do not cut your salad; instead fold your leafy greens with your fork. If you do not want more wine, leave your glass nearly full.

Do not miss the French coffee experience. Coffee served in French cafés is considered one of the best. If you like it brewed, plain and strong, just say café. If you like it with steamed milk, ask for café au lait. If you prefer your coffee with cream, it’s café crème. Coffee served the American way is Café Americain. You will find that there are so many ways to serve your coffee. Choose one you like, sit back, sip and watch passersby while mulling on another trip to France.

How to Enjoy Airshows in England

When people think about visiting England they may be thinking that there are only historical sites that would be of interest. They couldn’t be more mistaken. There are many modern attractions that visitors can enjoy while they are in England. Airshows in England, for example, are great displays of modern technology that will both thrill and amaze visitors regardless of whether they are history buffs or want to see some truly modern aeronautical marvels.

Airshows tend to run between March and October. Many air force bases have them on a yearly basis. They tend to be scheduled so that they fall on different weekends which can give you the opportunity to travel from base to base and watching as you go. Some airshows feature modern planes such as Harrier jets in action. For plane enthusiasts this is phenomenal. Part of the draw of these airshows is that you can see planes in the air performing complex maneuvers and thrilling the crowd with their acrobatic abilities.

There are two much larger air shows that run each year. One is organized and put on by the Shuttleworth Collection. The second is put on by the Imperial War Museum. The Imperial War Museum Duxford not only has modern warcraft on display, it also has some older aircraft as well. Some have great military significance such as the Hurricane and the Spitfire. Both of these have had an important role to play in the aeronautic history of Britain during times of war.

Fans of American aircraft will not be disappointed by the display at the Imperial War Museum. A portion of the museum is set aside as the American Air Museum and many planes such as Mustangs are available for viewing. The American Air Museum is located on the same grounds as the Imperial War Museum. If you are visiting the Duxford museum you may want to check their schedule of events. The museum does have events every weekend as well as larger airshows that run four times a year.

The shows at Duxford can be fantastic for individuals who love modern aircraft. For others who want to see aviation in its infancy, the Shuttleworth Collection may be more enjoyable. Some of the aircraft that make up the Shuttleworth Collection date from the 1920’s and 1930’s while others were used in World War I. Some planes predate even this early period in aviation history. Even if you have seen aircraft from that period elsewhere it is likely that they were not in working condition. At the Shuttleworth Collection, you can see them in the air. The take offs and landings all take part on grassy ground in order to conform to the flying conditions at the time. One of Shuttleworth’s mandates is to keep as many of their aircraft in flying condition as possible. They open their doors to the public and hold shows as frequently as possible.

The airshows at the Shuttleworth Collection are not always held when scheduled simply because the flying conditions may not be right. If you are going up in a plane that is nearing one hundred years in age, you need to ensure that the proper weather and wind conditions are present. Even if you cannot see the craft in the air, it is still worth a trip to the facility in order to see them on the ground.

Both the Shuttleworth collection and the Imperial Museum can be visited in one day as they are located closely together enough to travel from one to the other. To reach the Shuttleworth collection, travel north from London on the A1 motorway. The collection is located a couple of miles off of the A1 approximately 48 kms (30 miles) from the city. It is located in Old Warden which is near Biggleswade. To reach the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, you will need to travel about 80 km (50 miles) from London along the M11 motorway.

When planning for a trip to Europe, France is always one of the choices. There are plenty of cities and locations which can be listed under France destinations. There are many places to visit in France. Every city has something to boast about. But based on what most tourists check, these are the top destinations in France:

The Eiffel Tower. No doubt this place is a must see for anyone who travels to France for whatever purpose. It is located in Champ de Mars in Paris. This city in itself is also famous. The Mont St Michel is a landmark which can be regarded as the second most popularly visited area in France. The cone-shaped islet is located in the Gulf of Saint Malo in northwestern France.

Contrary to common belief, France is also a great place to be explored and trekked by backpackers. And backpacking in France is not expensive either. By simply following easy tips for backpackers, you can have the best backpacking trip in France even if you are on a tight budget.

Getting a cheap flight to France is just the tip of the iceberg. Some tips for backpackers include being really flexible with dates. The best days to fly in a week are during the mid-week, never on weekends. When hurdling a holiday, opt for after the holiday and never before. You can also have a Christmas time backpacking trip if you want, but choose to fly between Christmas and New Year. A scenic drive through the Riviera Corniches in France

Many people enjoy driving the Riviera Corniches because they are challenging and because the scenery is so beautiful. The Corniches are three roads that hug the coast. All three follow the same stretch but at different levels on the mountain side. All three Corniches are approximately 20 to 30 miles (32 to 50 km) in length. They link Nice, France to Monaco and on to Cap Martin and Menton, which lies on the Italian border.

Ancient history buffs may want to travel the Grande Corniche which is the highest of the three roads. Napoleon began building it and followed the Roman Aurelian Way. This road weaves in and out of the mountains, which means that you only get sea views for part of the time. You will find some of the most beautiful views along this route especially when travelling the 11 mile (18 km) stretch between La Turbie and Nice.

If you are not feeling adventurous enough to try the high road you may want to try the Moyenne Corniche. The medieval town of Eze is located along this road. It is a great place to stop. Many tourists choose to stop there and enjoy walking the labyrinthine tangle of narrow streets. The town is perched above the Mediterranean. You will be able to get some spectacular pictures in this village because it is perched on a rocky outcropping and the vistas are spectacular.

In Eze you will find many different restaurants and cafes simply because the town does cater to tourists. It is also where some well-known hotels are located although these tend to be expensive much like the restaurants are.

The third road is known as the Basse Corniche or Corniche Inferieure. This was once a coastal road that connected numerous towns and villages. It is also positioned between steep mountain sides and the Mediterranean Sea. You may also want to try taking photographs at this level as the perspective will be quite different than from the other two roads.

You may want to try and combine a trip along more than one of the roads. It is possible to switch from one to another as they do intersect in some of the villages. Switching from the Moyenne Corniche to the Corniche Inferieure and then driving back along the Grande Corniche can be a wonderful trip that will be full of great memories.

You may find that April and May are the best times to visit. The Mediterranean climate makes it hospitable all year long but it tends to be much more crowded throughout July and August. This is because these months tend to be when many Europeans take a month long vacation.

If you do not like the idea of staying in Eze there are many other towns that offer great atmosphere and have places to stay as well. Some of the more popular villages include Menton, La Turbie, Roquebrune, Cap Martin and Cap Ferrat. Other people choose to stay in Beaulieu, Cap d’Ail, Monte Carlo or Villefranche-sur-Mer.

How to travel safely as women and students

Unfortunately; women and students particularly young ones are more likely to be involved in a crime against them when travelling in Europe. They also are more likely to have problems and difficulties with certain government officials and possibly trouble with locals. So it is because of this that any women or student traveling through and in Europe should follow a few easy safety tips.

If you’re a student you are travelling to Europe there are some things you should keep in mind when you do travel. Not every person you come across can be trusted, no matter how nice they may seem at first. It pays to be a little wary of everyone you meet who you do not know. This is an important first tip; don’t give out your trust too easily and be a little wary of all people.

It always pays to learn a little of the countries language before you travel; this way if you do get into trouble you can at least understand or speak to people who don’t speak too much English. You will be able to get directions and communicate easier with the people around you. No one is saying you have to be fluent in the language; just learn as much as you can to be safer. Learn particular phrases that you may need such as, where is the police station, where is the hotel, where is the US embassy and such like.

Make sure you are up on all the laws and cultures of the country that you are visiting on your trip. Don’t go overboard with the partying and be respectful of the locals and other tourists. Don’t take drugs and try not to drink so you become drunk; you need to keep hold of your wits when you’re in a foreign country; then you won’t fall victim to crimes against you or become involved I a situation where you end up being arrested by local police.

Never walk out on your own at night; particularly if you’re a women or a young student. Always get licensed taxis if you’re on your own or if you can rent a car and use that instead. Or you could always go out in a large group so you’re never alone.

Always keep what you are carrying well hidden on your body; if your iPod or cell phone is on view; you are making yourself prime for mugging and attacking. Try and hide cash somewhere where they won’t look or won’t have time to look, such as your shoes or stuck to your frame somehow. The less it looks like you have valuables the better as you’re a less likely target. If you do get mugged or attacked; scream for help and run to closest well lit area or lit house for safety and get the police involved immediately.
