Electronic safety when in Europe
US electrical outlets are different to those in Europe, so if you’re planning on traveling to Europe in the near future the first thing you need is an electrical adapter to take with you. Of course; it’s not as simple as just that, the electrical output in Europe is twice the amount of what is needed in the US. Therefore even using an adapter could cause a fire or the ruining of whatever it is your using in Europe.
Another thing to consider is that not all the countries in Europe use exactly the same adapter. Always make sure you look into this before you travel; your travel agent or whoever you booked your vacation with should be able to tell you what you need. Also contacting the hotel where you are staying should be able to tell you what you will have to have; they may even have the facilities there for you already.
If you’re doing a tour of Europe you will therefore need several different adapters; always have them spate and label them accordingly; the last thing you need to do is go through them all to see which fits!
The user manual of whatever it is your wanting to take with you and see if it tells you any information in there about adapters and electrical output. Say fore example if the manual tells you the item you have can only handle a maximum voltage of 110 then you will need to find and purchase a transformer as well as an adapter.
If you’re taking your laptop with you on your vacation; they can usually adjust accordingly the power output in whatever country you have travelled to, so in this case you won’t need a transformer. Also items that tend not to need transformers are digital cameras and also mobile phones. Always check first however, just to be 100% sure.
There are many items that you can find where you are staying so it’s better to leave them at home; hairdryers for instance are notorious for melting out and causing fires when used in Europe. Your hotels will more than likely provide one and if not they are not expensive to buy when you get there.
There are also less electrical outlets when you’re in Europe than there are in the US. This is usually as electricity is a lot more money in Europe than in the States, so only take the essential electrical items that you need. Leave the electrical razor at home and buy disposable ones when you get to your vacation destination. Another item to leave at home is the travel clock; hotels usually provide them as standard in Europe and if they don’t have a wakeup call so you don’t waste your holiday.
Whenever you go travelling to Europe always do your research and make sure your only taking what you really need. Check all the manuals of all the electrical items you are taking to make sure they are not completely useless when you get there. Get all your adapters and any transformers you need before travelling and you will have a great vacation!
