Maui Hawaii: How Did It Get It’s Name

It’s a known fact that Hawaii has a lot of islands, and Maui is considered the seventeenth largest island within the United States Area. It’s also the 2nd largest island included in the Hawaiian group of islands which spans 727.2 sq miles. Maui is considered to be within the state of Hawaii. It belongs to Maui County which consists of other islands such as Kahoolawe, Molokai and Lanai. The four islands combined together will bring you Maui Nui.

During the year 2000, the population of Maui flourished to 117,644. Kahului, is a town in Maui and has the largest population, which is unsurprisingly also its largest town. Whereas another town called Wailuku is known as the seat of the county of Maui.

So How Did Maui Got Its Name?

In early times, it is said that the Native Hawaiians said that the origin of the name came from the tale of the Polynesian navigator, Hawai’iloa. He was noted to have discovered Maui according to legend. The way it goes, Hawai’iloa named his son after the demigod named Maui. Maui, as the demigod, raised the islands of Hawaii from the depths of the sea. Maui Island is also known as “Valley Isle” because of the great isthmus which is in between two volcanoes.

Maui and its history

At first, the Polynesians were the ones who settled in Maui. They came from the Marquesas and the Tahiti. The culture of Hawaii originated from the kapu system which was introduced by the Tahitians. This was a social system that greatly affected the entire aspects of life of the people of Maui.

Around the mid-1700s, a modern history for Hawaii was created. It was during this time the Battle of Kenaniwal happened when King Kamehameha I resided and made his mark in the place of Lahaina after conquering Maui in the year 1790.

Capt. James Cook, in November 26, 1778 was the first European explorer to discover Maui. Though he never set foot on the island as he encountered difficulty to find a proper spot on the island to land his vessel. The actual European who step foot on Maui and visited it was a Frenchman named Admiral Hean Francois de Galaup de La Perouse. He landed on the now known La Perouse Bay that was on May 29, 1786. Following that historical event, More travelers from Europe came and established a more productive part between them and the people of Maui.

One of the groups of Europeans who came to Maui was the missionaries who made a few impact on the natives there. They were responsible for the banning of hula dancing among others. and to a greater extent, taught them how to become more civilized. The knowledge of writing and reading were shared with the natives by these missionaries that resulted in the alphabet that consists of the 12 letters. They also brought about the printing press which documented written history of the people of Maui. In an ironic sense, the missionaries preserved and altered most of the native’s culture.

Maui, Hawaii started to participate centrally in the height of the Pacific Theatre which staged World War II. Maui was a place to relax, rest and was also a training ground. The beaches was filled and used by the military for training and landings for sabotage and demolition.

A liger is a cross of a lion and a tiger, so it looks half-and-half of both.

The park’s denizens come from all over the world, many from Africa, a few elsewhere. There are hundreds of them, more than that of Atlanta Zoo, and thus some will be unfamiliar to many visitors. All animals are free-roaming in the wild preserve, and they may be found at the swamps, streams, wooded parts, plains and grassy ranges. To see them you need a vehicle, but if you do not have a car, there is the Zebra van to ride in. The van roams the place so you can spot the animals better than using an unguided car. It is also much safer and affords best views through its large glass windows.

Many animals are rather familiar with humans, and any may just suddenly pop his face at the vehicle window, looking for food or petting, and that can be scary. However, most animals are tame, and those that are not tame do not go near people. Nevertheless, staying within the vehicle is advised when exploring the reserve.

Entrance may cost $14 for each child between two years and teens as well as the senior citizens, while teeners and adults pay $17 per head. Kids below two years old are free, and group visits like school class tours are sometimes discounted. Ditto for family visits, although it may not always be so. Inquire beforehand if possible via their website, also for best times to visit the park.

Aside from the free-roam areas, there are also enclosed parts where visitors can be nearer some animals. These sections are walk-through, such as Petting Zoo, where tourists, especially children, can actually touch the animals. There is also MacDonald Farm of familiar animal species, the Alligator Pit and the Monkey House. Restaurants and picnic facilities have also been provided for refreshing the hungry and thirsty visitors through with the tour.

The park also offers visits to the Callaway Gardens and hot air balloon flights, while the town has stores where the more conventional tourist can go shopping.

The Pine Mountain Animal Safari park tour is something totally unique, most especially for children open to the wonders of the animal kingdom. Here they can see animals found mostly only in Africa and other exotic far away places, and they can be familiar with animals normally only seen in farms. So the tour is an educational trip as well as a voyage of discovery for the kids, something they can enjoy and remember for a long time.

So if you are planning a vacation with the children, go to the Pine Mountain in Georgia, and for a few hours live in the plains and jungles of Africa on a safari, and enjoy it there.

Experience a Golfer’s Paradise in Maui

Although there may be plenty of world class golfing around the country, none can compare to the golfer’s paradise that Maui has to offer. Maui, along with Molokai and Lanai, offer sixteen of the world’s most beautiful golf courses that not only look great, but challenge you as well. Seemingly part of the landscape, playing golf here can be a wonderful and exciting adventure.

With the climate staying warm and sunny most of the year, you will almost always have perfect weather to soak up while you are teeing off. Although the afternoon winds keep some golfers away, you can certainly enjoy the morning and evening golf that makes Maui’s golf courses so desired.

These golf courses are certainly not for the beginners however. In fact, they are quite challenging because they feature different grasses, natural hazards that are quite unusual in shape and trade winds that gust out of nowhere. Added to the fact that you are often distracted with the amazing ocean and landscape views, you may want to tune up your game before you step foot on the courses. South Maui offers some of the best courses, with less wind then West Maui golf courses. Most of the greens break toward the ocean, allowing you to take in the beauty as you take on the course.

The tee times vary, but most accept reservations a few days in advance. The rules are generally the same at each gold course, with gold attire requested. On some courses, they will not allow you to play if you are not dressed appropriately. For example, some courses prohibit denim, t-shirts, or tank tops.

Recognized as one of the best courses on the island of Maui, Kapalua Resort has 1500 acres of greenery surrounded by a pineapple plantation. It includes three of the world’s most challenging courses called The Bay, The Plantation, and The Village. The scenery is also amazing. In fact, hole 6 of The Village, is considered the most scenic area in which to view the island. The Plantation you may have seen on television, as it is the host to the PGA Tour’s Mercedes Benz Championship. Located on the Northwest coast of Maui, Kapalua Resort is truly the place to come in play if you want both stunning views and challenging courses.

Another fantastic resort is the Kaanapali Golf Course at the Kaanapali resort which is located in West Maui. Featuring two 18-hole golf courses, The North Course and The South Course, The North Course is considered to be one of Hawaii’s toughest finishing holes. The Senior PGA Tour event, the Kaanapali Classic is held here every year and offers exciting finishes each and every time.

If you are traveling to Maui and plan on doing some golfing, you may want to consider getting a package deal that includes your hotel room at the resort, golfing fees, as well as a rental car to get around Maui. Guests of the resorts playing at their own course will usually get lower fees and better tee times. Certainly, for any golfing enthusiast, you can’t beat the great courses available to you on the island of Maui.

Taking In the Culture of Maui

Maui is not just about playing on the beach and snorkeling through the many reefs, but it is also about the culture and traditions of the amazing locals that call Maui home. In fact, right from the moment you step off the plane you will experience the tradition of the Hawaiian Lei which is presented to you as a welcome to this wonderful island. A simple floral garland that is placed around the neck is a way of saying Aloha and letting you know that they are honored that you have come to discover what they have always known about Maui.

From the harmonious sounds of the music to the Hawaiian phrases you will feel as if you are one with the island. To be part of the culture, you should pick up a few common phrases that you will hear. Aloha of course is the most important, as it means much more than hello. It is an expression that many people use to greet others or to say goodbye, but it could also mean “I love you.” Another word that you should know, Mahola, means “thank you.” Finally, two words that you definitely want to know are Kane and Wahine, which means man and woman respectively. You will need to know this if you plan on using the restrooms while you are in Maui.

Although entertaining and enjoyable, much of what Maui has to offer also allows you to get to know more about the Hawaiian culture, the history of Maui, as well as how life on Maui has changed over the years. You may want to experience the traditional luau which is a feast of food featuring cultural music and history. To truly experience the luau as the natives would plan on enjoying yourself, and eating tons of fantastic cuisine. Usually held on the beach, you can immerse yourself in the culture by watching or even taking part in the fire dancing of the Polynesian culture. The hula dancers also give you a great way to learn the “language” of the dance. These luaus are usually filled with foods that include traditional fare such as Kalua pig, Hawaiian sweet potatoes, Poke, and Poi, along with plenty of alcohol. Luaus can be found throughout the island and may be offered at your hotel as well. Children are always welcome and usually enjoy themselves very much.

The history of Maui dates back as far as King Kamehameha the Great which you can learn about on your walking tour of Lahaina. You can tour the Old Courthouse, the Old Fort, as well as many other historical buildings that will teach you about the history and culture of the island as well as the people. From there you can learn about the agriculture which includes sugarcane, macadamia nuts, and other products on your narrated tram tour that travels through the countryside. You can even take in the Maui Tropical Plantation that will give you a first hand view of how sugar is made.

If you can, you should plan on visiting Maui in late September through mid-October to enjoy some of the many Aloha festivals that celebrate the culture by showing you the music, dance, and history of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai. Whether it is art you are looking for, or culture in general you are sure to have an experience you won’t soon forget.

With the blending of old and new, you will find that Maui offers so much more than you could ever expect. By taking in the culture of Maui, you will have a new appreciation for the people and islands of Hawaii.

Revel in New Orleans-One of the Top Louisiana Destinations

For many people, Louisiana means New Orleans and New Orleans is Louisiana. The largest city of the state, New Orleans is the most famous and the most heterogeneous. Almost all races and nationalities can be found in New Orleans, including Irish, German, French, Italian, African-Americans, Creoles and their various mixtures. It is one reason tourists and visitors frequent the city: they can always find people from their own country or those who speak their language. No wonder New Orleans has been long-named as the ‘Queen City of the South”.

Must-see Places in New Orleans

New Orleans also has many interesting places that can delight your wanderlust and sense of discovery. There is, for example, the Musee Conti Wax Museum. Though probably not as famous as that of Madame Tussaud’s, the museum displays the history of the city via life-size wax figures and tableaux, each of the 154 sets telling its own tale. Entertainment, information and history in a single location is something else as a concept.

And of course, there are historically famous plantation mansions in New Orleans of the ante-bellum era. Each expresses the time’s culture embodied in the architecture, lay-out, materials and ambience, so it can be worthwhile to visit them to get a feel of New Orleans history. Take the Gray Line to tour the ‘river road’ to the Oak Alley Plantation, the most famous.

New Orleans activities

To know New Orleans best, tour the city via the Royal Carriages so you can more easily imagine how it looked like two or three centuries before. The horse-drawn carriages will take you in a sedate clip-clopping pace to the city’s famous landmarks, especially Jackson Square. Another way is the Steamboat Natchez Riverboat Cruise, which follows the Mississippi River as in the olden times. Good music, fine dining, and spectacular nature views along the way will not fail to give you a very enjoyable time in New Orleans.

Or, join the Cookin’ Cajun Cooking School. Top professional chefs —some New Orleans’ best— will teach you how to cook, enjoy and appreciate the Creole and Cajun cuisines, for a new kind of experience. You may also tour the well-known places of hauntings and ghost manifestations with the Hauntings and Ghost Tour, each site with stories that can be generations-old. Some venues are simply spooky to be scary.

Some festivals of New Orleans

But perhaps the best reason to visit New Orleans is the annual Mardi Gras festival that originated from Medieval Europe. Just like its Rio de Janeiro counterpart, the ‘Fat Tuesday’ festivity is regularly held from 1781before the Lenten Season starts, and comes complete with parades, brass bands, floats, shows, colorful costumes and the never-ending parties afterwards.

Then there is the Independence Day Go 4th on the River Festival, when people crowd the riverside for music, entertainment, and others, including a spectacular fireworks display capping the event. The French Quarter Festival also showcases about 150 musical performances over a 3-day weekend, largely with jazz and other popular music genres.

So if you want to visit the South, list New Orleans number one in the places to visit. You won’t go wrong.

Maui Hawaii General Climate Structure

Generally, the islands of Hawaii is characterized by two seasons with temperatures that are uniform everywhere, extensive cloudy formations, trade wind flow that is dominant, geographical differences in distribution of rainfall, and a relatively high humidity in most days. Maui, Hawaii is marked by wide range climate patterns and weather conditions which are influenced by a lot of factors.

Physical factors that affect Maui are reflected by its environment in a physical sense. These are:

1. Maui’s climate is influenced by the strong marine lifestyle precipitated by the insularity of extremes of the islands themselves. Almost half of Maui is located within 5 miles of the coastline of the island.

2. Maui’s irregular and rugged topography produces to variations of marked conditions differentiated from one locality to another. Air that is swept inlands is shunted in a way by the valleys, slopes which are vastly opened and mountainous tops. Complexity of this three dimensional course results in a difference of distributed winds garnering from one place to another in a terms of rainfall, wind speed and formation of clouds. If topography is irregular and is combined with elevation variations, it marks the difference of temperature in air as an outcome.

3. Pattern of weather are usually determined by the elevation of the area and depends if it turns away or faces to the Trade winds.

These factors that seem to contradict conjugates to create a diverse and unique set of conditions in climate wherein it results to having a specificity ranging to loosely defined regions of the chain of island. Sub-regions are basically defined by location and by predominant physiologic features. Sub-regions are:

Interior lowlands

These are known to have intermediate categories sharing similar characteristics of other sub-regions. Occasional experience of having intense afternoon showers from a well-developed formation of clouds that are due to the heating of the place during the wake of day.

Windward lowlands

Considered as the area below two thousand feet on the northeast side of a specific island. The region is oriented in a rough perpendicular direction of smooth flowing trade winds. It can be moderately rainy with frequent occurrences of trade wind which induces showers. Compared to other regions, air temperature has a more uniform distribution.

Rainfalls are showers of water which are common within the vicinity although, some may experience lighter or heavier rainfall than most of the places. Some can experience only a brief sprinkle of rain and then it’s sunny again. Rainfall can have an average pour of about 300 inches along windward slopes. Because of Maui’s topography packed with mountainous details, it seldom receives rainfall in overdosage.

On the other hand, summer is the more dominant season that is why rainstorms are rare. Summer is also one of the best reasons why people dominate parts of Maui for vacations and relaxations.

Variations of daily rainfall can most likely occur on a night time or when morning comes. But variability lessens as the afternoon approaches. The occurrences of rainfall can be more prominent during winter season wherein storms may most likely prevail. Because of the swings in rainfall, there are times when drought tends to happen and affects the economic crisis severely. Rainstorms can only be counted therefore droughts may hit hard which is why Maui Hawaii tends to suffer from little or no rainfall at all.

Rich Culture In Top Louisiana Destinations

Contemporary Louisiana culture has been largely formed by its long history and influences from the peoples that settled there. First the Indians were there, then the French, and finally all peoples from almost everywhere came and settled in the state. As a result it became one of the most -if not the most-heterogeneous state in the United States, the exact definition of the US Great Seal’s inscription e pluribus unum.

Louisiana was ‘discovered’ and explored by Jean-Baptiste LeMoyne de Bienville, a French-Canadian, who claimed the territory in behalf of France on the basis of ‘right of discovery’. To cement the claim, the settlement of New Orleans was founded around 1718, peopled mostly by pioneering Frenchmen. The whole claim was bought by the United States in 1803, when Napoleon Bonaparte needed financing for his European wars, for $15 million, considered a folly at the time.

The Louisiana Purchase encompassed the area from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and from below the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. However, Louisiana was a much-reduced territory when it was admitted to the Union in 1812, due largely to the settlement of the upper areas that also subsequently became states.

The French Quarter

The points of interest in Louisiana’s French Quarter center on its historical buildings, many still in their original state. They show the period’s architectural concepts and construction styles, including the use of space and materials. Likewise, they played important roles in the state’s history, both through the personages that resided there and as venues of important events. Touring the French Quarter is getting back in history and feeling the tempo of the olden times.

Go to the Garden District, and join the walking tours visiting the most important places in the vicinity, to learn its history the best way. The Garden District is considered National Historic District, which means it is of national importance as a place of historical events.

There are also tours of plantation mansions like the Magnolia Plantation House, the Melrose Plantation and the Oak Alley Plantation with its ages-old oak trees festooned with Spanish moss.

Louisiana is all that jazz

The New Orleans Jazz Festival every spring showcases the times’ best jazz productions, much-awaited by jazz aficionados, along with the Jazz Fest and the Heritage Festival. Being the birthplace of the music genre, New Orleans has produced many notable and famous jazz musicians, and the jazz fests are the events to attend and have a preview of what can be in that music field.

The museums of Louisiana

Traces of Louisiana’s culture can be viewed in its several museums. The New Orleans Art Museum contains American and French art pieces, but also includes the works of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Joan Miro and Edgar Degas. The Ogden Museum, on the other hand, is dedicated to showing particular areas in Louisiana’s history like the African-American period and that of Mardi Gras festival.

Lastly, the Café du Monde is the best place to taste Louisiana’s distinct cuisine, largely influenced by French and Cajun style of dishes. Really, Louisiana’s history is in its soul.
