Traveling Along the Rhine River – What to See and Do In Rhine Valley

One of the more interesting tours that you can take in Germany is one along the Rhine River Valley. There are many things to see in the valley and many of them are located in the 36 mile (58 km) long stretch between Bingen and Koblenz. Even though the distance is not a long one, it is still possible to see many of the villages that are scattered throughout this region.

You can choose to see the Rhine River in a variety of ways. Many people choose to drive the distance because they can do so at their own pace. If you are someone who would prefer not to have to do any driving there are also Rhine River cruises which may be more to your liking.

Driving In Rhine Valley

If you do not like the idea of being stuck on a cruise instead of being able to explore, you can drive through the area. Keep in mind, however, that the roads running alongside the river are narrow and winding. They line the roads on both sides of the river. Even though the stretch of valley between St. Goar and Bacharach is short there are many different castles to see in your travels.

When driving, you should know that they are car ferries that will take you to the left and right side of the river depending on the location that you’re on instead of going upriver or downriver. There are small towns and castles on both side of the river if you want to do some exploration.

Using the car ferries saves time because the other alternative of crossing the two sides is the long way through Koblenz to the North or Rudesheim to the south via the bridge crossing there. If you happen to be walking the ferries can also carry you across and it costs less. The following website at http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=53&L=3 has the schedules and locations for the car ferries in Rhine. Some of these ferry operators also offer boat cruises that you could check out by visiting the individual sites from the link above. The site is in German so if you absolutely need to know the time these ferries are in operation; you need to learn a word or two or just use http://translate.google.com/.

The Castles And Cities In The Rhine Valley

The valley has so many castles because, in the past, they were used for protection while land owners collected the tolls charged on river traffic. Some have been restored and others have been allowed to crumble into ruins. Many were spruced up in the 19th century according to what was considered a romantic ideal. History buffs will love the fact that it is possible to stay in some of the castles and to explore others.

The land around the valley is hilly. Some hills have castles on them and others have vineyards. Small villages grew up in the protective circles of the various castles and these are great places to just sit back and relax. While there, you may want to watch the river traffic much as villagers have been doing for hundreds of years.

You will find many places to stay in and eat in when travelling through this part of Germany. Some of the best accommodations can be found in Bacharach and St. Goar. Wine lovers will enjoy staying in either one of these towns because of the great wine they can offer to travelers.

A romantic and cozy two to three star hotel restaurant is in Liebenstein castle. This castle is situated on top of the highest peak of the middle Rhine. The location of this place is close to Kamp-Bornhofen. Marksburg and the Lorelei cliff are also nearby. The rooms are actually part of the castle itself and have views of the Rhine valley.

Don’t forget to stop by St Goarshausen, the famous Lorelei Rock is located here. The Lorelei Rock is a rock that is 120 metres tall above the water. This beautiful town is 30km south of Koblenz. The Katz castle is nearby but it’s not open to the public. The Maus Castle is also nearby, it got its name because of Katz castle being nearby. Novelty items not found anywhere in the world like the Steiff animal toys can also be found in St Goar.

From St Goar, you should not miss getting to Fortress Rheinfels. It is the biggest standing castle ruin in West Germany. There are independent vaults and miles and miles of underground tunnels. It was once the biggest castle on the Rhine, but now it is only a fraction of its original size albeit still being huge in its current state. The tunnels are about 600 feet long and can be explored but you have to be careful especially if you’re claustrophobic. You can never fully stand up while in there since it’s a small spaced area. There is a 4 star hotel here which is a part of the castle – they offer a rustic restaurant with a great view of the Rhine River. Spas, swimming pool and every typical amenity you could find at a luxury hotel are available here. Enjoy a comfortable modern stay while being surrounded by medieval surroundings.

To get to Fortress Rheinfels, you can take a miniature railway which leaves every 15 minutes near the town church in St Goarshausen. You can also see the world’s largest free hanging cuckoo clock on the return trip from Fortress Rheinfels.

If you are in Boppard, there is a fortress nearby which is called Kurtrierische Burg. The museum here showcases ancient coins and weapons. There is amazing scenery from Boppard to St Goar if you take a boat which lasts about one and a half hour. The boat is slow and steady so any photographer can take in the views and take splendid pictures along this part of the river.

Make sure Marksburg Castle Is on your list of places to visit as well. This castle has never been conquered and hence remains mostly the same today as it has for 700 years.

Other notable castles that you can visit are Castle Schonburg Castle Reichenstein. Both also have hotels that you can stay in. There are a lot more castles you can visit in the Rhine Valley. The following site has more choices for you to pick and choose your destinations in Rhine http://www.rhinecastles.com/

Die Lorelei by a.renate, on Flickr

A place that is this old is bound to have its fair share of legends and one of them is in Lorelei. This is a point where the river narrows and becomes quite treacherous. A legend about mermaids sprang up about this region of the river. Sailors blamed them for any shipwrecks that took place. St. Goar is the town that they stayed in to give thanks once they were past the narrow point.

As you can see, the Rhine River valley is truly a magical place to visit.

A Drive Through Normandy – Where the Past and Present Meet

When many people think of Normandy, the D-Day invasion which took place in the Second World War tends to come to mind quite quickly. There is much more to this beautiful area than wartime history however, and driving through the area can help you experience it in a way that television shows and movies could never do.

A drive through Normandy will often begin in Rouen. This large city has enough historical areas to make even the biggest history buff happy. You may want to keep them entertained by taking a walk through the Place du Vieux Marche. This is the old market square where Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) met her untimely end when she was burned at the stake in 1431. If you are driving yourself and are not part of a tour, you may want to take advantage of the car park that is located near this area.

There are other historical sites to see in Rouen. The Gros Horloge is, as its’ name suggests, a large clock. The tower that the clock sits in is so large that it actually straddles the street. You can pass through the tower and walk to the Cathedrale Notre Dame. Anyone who is familiar with the works of Claude Monet will recognize this cathedral as it was the subject of some of his paintings.

Once you have tired of Rouen (something which can take some time to do) you can leave and continue your tour through Normandy. The next stop on your tour should be in the town of Honfleur. This is a harbor town and the views are so beautiful that it is no wonder Impressionistic artists were drawn to the area. If you want to enjoy a meal and glass of wine here you may want to make your way to the Vieux Bassin or Old Dock. There are many fine places to stay while in Honfleur if you want to take a longer break from your tour.

You can continue on to Bayeaux, home of the world famous Bayeaux tapestry. Far from being a simple piece of cloth, this tapestry describes the events of the Norman invasion of England. It is a massive piece of embroidered cloth that measures 20 inches in width and 230 feet in length. The cloth dates from 1066 and is a major historical artifact because of the wealth of information it gives regarding life at the time it was created. It is incredibly detailed and even shows the passage of Haley’s Comet in 1066.

The tapestry now resides in la Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeaux which has a presentation you can watch that talks about the tapestry and the story that it tells. The story is from the Norman point of view and the Normans were successful in conquering England. This is something that should be kept in mind when viewing the images on the tapestry.

While you are in the Bayeaux area, you may want to take a trip to the beaches of Normandy. You need to travel about 10 miles or 16 kms from the town of Bayeaux in order to do so. There are many museums that are dedicated to the Allied landing on D-Day. Walking on the beaches and reflecting about what happened is powerful and very moving, much as touring the cemeteries and reading the names of the fallen soldiers is.

Mont Saint Michel is a great place to end your tour of Normandy. The bay is home to a monastery which perches on a rock in the middle and is beautiful when viewed from a distance. Although the town may feel like a tourist trap when you first arrive it does not feel like this everywhere. You may want to consider the fact that the town has been attracting pilgrims (the original tourists) for hundreds of years and there have always been stalls and merchants on hand to offer the travelers items they need (or think they need).

Driving Through Brittany, France – Enjoying The Sights And Unique Customs Of Brittany

If you are traveling through France you may want to make sure to take a trip to Brittany. This region, which is also known as Bretagne, can offer some of the most spectacular scenery of anywhere in the whole of France. Many individuals travel to Brittany in order to see the megaliths at Carnac and, in the process, discover a wonderful place that they want to return to again and again.

The region is located in the northwest corner of France. It is surrounded by water on three sides. To the north is the English Channel. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds Brittany on the south and the west. The abundance of water and the amazing natural beaches attract individuals from across France and around the world to this region. While the water surrounds the area on three sides, the southern facing peninsula tends to be the best location if you want to find some wonderful beaches to relax on.

If you are flying into Paris and want to add a trip to Brittany to your itinerary, all you need to do is to head along the E50. This will take you through the cities of Le Mans, Rennes and Vannes. Rennes is actually the capital of the Brittany region. The city has an old town center. Visiting this area will be somewhat like taking a step back in time. There are still examples of the half-timbered houses visible to interested individuals. You can choose to either stop for lunch or to spend a longer time exploring the city.

Near Vannes is a medieval castle, the Chateau de Josselin. You can take a look at the kind of fortifications that were used in times past and spend a wonderful afternoon lunching on the Oust River. You can then continue on to another ancient site: the megalithic stones located at Carnac. These are located about six hours outside of Paris. If you want to learn more about Carnac or other points of historical interest you will want to stop at the Musee de Prehistoire while you are in the area.

One thing that many people notice about Brittany is that it seems different than the rest of France. The language is different as are many of the customs. There is an important reason for this. The area has had ties to the Cornish and Welsh people in England and these ties go back hundreds if not thousands of years. The Breton language, which is still spoken by about a quarter of the inhabitants of the region, is actually much closer to Welsh or Cornish than it is to French. Many of the customs and costumes are more closely related to the Cornish and Welsh as well.

The food in Brittany is wonderful as well. Some regional favorites include crepes and apple dishes including apple cider. Crepes are thin pancakes that can then be filled with a number of different ingredients. In Brittany, they can be made with normal flour or buckwheat flour. In that case, the crepe is called a gallette instead. Seafood is also a huge part of the Breton diet. This is not surprising since the region is bordered by water on three sides. Seafood in Brittany is fresh and delicious and prepared with great care.

If you want a true cultural experience you may want to spend some time in Quimper. This is a town that has held on to its roots and the inhabitants love to wear traditional costumes. The Breton language is also spoken here much of the time. Another great town is Concarneau. The town is ancient and has stood since the 14th century. There are still signs of the old city such as the walled town built on an island in the harbor and ancient buildings that are many hundreds of years old.

Other towns that you may want to visit include Dinan and Saint Malo. Both towns have a lot of flair to offer tourists and can make for a great vacation and some amazing photographs.

Champagne Tours in France: In Wine There is Truth

Aside from considering the best prices in flights to France, it is a great idea to consider what kind of vacation you want to experience. Those who are traveling with children or family members often choose ski family holidays especially when they are coming from a place with tropical or sunny weather. Others who are health and fitness enthusiasts choose bicycle tours with varying destinations and durations. Another recommended tour package is the champagne tours in France. champagne-region-day-trip-from-paris-by-minivan-in-paris

You will surely enjoy exploring the champagne region of the country and develop a new sense of appreciation for the culture and history that goes along with the industry of wine making and vineyard growing.

The map of Champagne region can easily be accessed online from many different tourism and geographic web sites. By going to these different web sites, you will also be able to see the reviews and ratings of the most famous champagne and wine brands in France, and in the whole world. The Champagne Region tour is basically comprised of a whole day experience in wine tasting and visiting various vineyards. Upon each visit, you will get to know the different stories and traditions behind the culture of wine making. To most, it is a family heritage that must be maintained and preserved for the years to come, while for others, it is a legacy built on generations of hard work and wise investments.

There are hundreds of French champagne houses that you can visit, depending on the tour package you have availed. Since there are limitations in the number of guests to be allowed inside the vineyards and other facilities, it is important to book your trips and tours at an earlier date. This way, you are guaranteed a slot in your sightseeing adventures and thrill seeking plans for each day in your vacation.

The Loire Valley wine tasting is one of the most popular activities and destinations when going on tour in France. The vineyards in this 66,000 hectare location are known to produce the best wines in the world. Witnessing the stories behind these famous wines and other products is something that money cannot replace.

Reims is the capital of Champagne and is another popular destination for wine tasting. The tour includes a visit to the gothic cathedral and a guided visit to the champagne caves known as “Mumm”. For a vineyard tour, enjoy a semi private visit to the most popular vineyards in the region, while the guide brings you back to the past with the historical backgrounds of each area. Enjoy hot and cold drinks and a few croissants to pair with your wine tasting adventures.

If you choose a private tour which costs more than semi private and classic tours, you have the capability to choose the champagne houses as your destinations as well as the restaurants where you want to dine in. The best combination is to choose small, mid size, and large producers of wines as your destination so you will have an idea on how each works, and the differences they have among each other.

Another great way to enjoy your private tours is the wine tasting experience. Here, you will learn how experts can identify the quality of wine based on its color, smell, and taste. Even though there are thousands of wines to choose from, you will be delighted by the varied samples that you can drink from and see for yourself which wines are the best tasting of all.

Another excellent way to enjoy your wine tasting experience is to be in art museums and painting exhibitions. Famous paintings by Pierre Auguste Renoir can be seen and marveled at in the different museums in France. He is famous for his paintings of vibrant lights and saturation of colors which attracts the interest of many collectors from around the world. Other famous paintings by Renoir are also popular displays in huge events and celebrations in France. Another enticing way to enjoy your wine tasting experience in the Champagne Region is to be captivated by the paintings by Van Gough.

What To Expect On Your Visit To Stonehenge

One of the most popular tourist destinations in England is Stonehenge. People flock to the site each year to experience this site for themselves. Many people travel there after they have researched or heard some of the Stonehenge myths or facts that they have been reading about for years. Other people have seen pictures and want to see what all the fuss is about in person.

The circle of stones is located in Southern England in an area called the Salisbury Plain. There are many images of this site. Some show just the circle of standing stones while others show modern followers of the druidic faith holding ceremonies there at sunrise on the Summer Solstice.

There are many different theories and myths as to the origins of Stonehenge. Scientists have been able to determine that the site was not built in a single stage. Instead, the site was worked on over a period of time. The earliest construction happened in approximately 3000 BCE. Scientists are still studying the area and are making new discoveries on a regular basis. It is because of these continuing discoveries that the site remains popular as a tourist attraction and has managed to capture worldwide attention.

Traveling to the site is not difficult. It is located close enough to London that you are able get there, see the henge and then return to London in one day. There are actually one day tours to the site that you can book if you do not feel like driving yourself. You can travel the 80 minutes between London and Salisbury by train and then book passage on the Stonehenge Tour Bus. This travels from the train station to the site on a half-hourly basis. You will be taken directly to the entrance of the Stonehenge site. In addition to seeing the circle of standing stones you will also be able to stop at Old Sarum. This is an Iron Age hill fort and was actually the site of Old Salisbury.

If you prefer to drive from London to Stonehenge it will mean traveling about 90 miles (145 km) to the site. You will need to travel about 2 miles west of Amesbury. The town sits at the point where A303 and A344/A360 intersect. From there you travel to the site which is very hard to miss. Because it is out in the middle of an open plain, and because English weather can be unpredictable, it is worthwhile to take something warm to wear. That way you will not catch a chill from any breezes or winds you may encounter.

In order to see Stonehenge you will need to pay an entry fee. If you know that you will be visiting this site as well as others in England you may want to purchase a British Heritage Pass. This will allow you to see Stonehenge and several other monuments as well. When you pay your entrance fee you will be able to get an audio tour. This is available in multiple languages if your command of English is not perfect.

Many people are surprised that they cannot get right up to the stones. In order to do so you will need to book a special access pass. It is easy to get pictures, however as the stones are only surrounded by a chain link fence. You can simply stick your camera through the mesh and take as many pictures as you would like.

These same people are also surprised to learn that Stonehenge is not the only piece of prehistory in the area. It can be fun to visit other historical sites such as the Neolithic burial mounds that are located nearby. One of the largest is the West Kennet long barrow. There is also the Avebury henge which is larger than Stonehenge. While you are in the area you may want to think about visiting Silbury Hill. This is the largest prehistoric man-made mound in Europe. Scientists are also studying these areas in order to get an idea of the people who lived in the area when the sites were being constructed.

For starters, plan your trip that it will not coincide with holidays in France. It is common knowledge that holidays in a particular place are the most expensive times to be in there, even for locals. The best time to check out destinations in France is during springtime. Prices are so low because it is considered the off peak season of tourism in France.

Another technique to save money and to accommodate kids is to opt not to check in at hotels in France. Look for apartments to rent or better yet scout for fully furnished apartments for rent. This way, you do not have to always eat out. You can run to the local market for kitchen supplies and cook your own meals. You will not be risking dining in at French restaurants with menu options that you cannot even say nor once served you cannot even fathom what the food is made of. It would be a winning bet that your kids will not even take a bite out of cervelle de veau or tete de veau when they learn that these are made from cow brain.

But if you really want to sample the French cuisine to complete the perfect French vacation experience, then it would be best to have breakfast before seven in the morning since French restaurants are almost empty at this time. It would be better to check in first for restaurants that serve meals catered for kids and with a family friendly budget. There is no need to mention to steer clear from fine dining places.

For places to go in France, there are the amusement parks in Paris France. Who would dare ignore Disneyland when you are planning a trip to France with your kids? Take for example the Cite des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Parc de la Villette which showcases the expo on Star Wars. Surely, every kid will just be at awe with the exhibits there. Admission will surely beat the value of any Louvre Museum tickets, but the famed museum should not be missed as well.

Other museums or Paris France attractions for kids include the Museum of Modern Art which is the theoretically speaking, continuation from the Musee d’Orsay’s collection. Then there too is the so-called Picasso’s Picassos which is said to be the great artist’s personal collection which include more than one thousand five hundred of the artist’s personal works and collection from other great artists too.

For a more chic French vacation, your whole family can head off to the South of France. Here is where you can sample the best beaches in the World. You can take your kids kayaking, snorkeling, diving or ride the yachts in the clear blue waters that South of France is known for. You do not even have to spend like the big shot celebrities that frequent the region. You can have a really great French vacation in the South of France even if you are on a tight budget with your kids. You just need to do some research when planning a trip to France. Then you will soon realize that, even on a budget trip, you can experience the same level of fun and enjoyment as that of what first-class packages offer.

Carnac and its Great Standing Stones – An Archaeological Marvel

Standing stone formations exist all around the world. Some, however, are more well-known than others. Many people would know what you were talking about if you mentioned Stonehenge but would have no idea what you were referring to if you mentioned the alignments at Carnac. This is a shame as the Carnac site is as impressive as Stonehenge if not more impressive.

Carnac is located in the area of Western France known as Brittany or Bretagne. The site is located about six hours southwest of Paris. This is great news for tourists as it means that they can travel there, see the standing stones and then return to the city for the evening without feeling like they have been travelling all day to reach their destination or to return back to their hotel.

Carnac has a number of standing stones that were placed in precise geometric patterns. Unlike the standing stones at Stonehenge that were placed in a circular pattern, Carnac’s stones have been positioned in eleven parallel rows of “alignments” as the patterns are called. At Le Menec, the alignments have been dated back about four thousand years. Over one thousand individual granite pieces have been arranged all over the site. The tallest of these pieces have been measured at 12 feet or 4 meters tall and the patterns run for more than one mile (2km).

While the site is old and appears to have weathered well, there has been some loss and damage that has taken place over time. Now, only 11 of the 12 original rows still stand. The 12th row was taken away by individuals and used as building materials or were knocked over and needed to be raised back into a standing position. Individuals who have studied the site feel that the stones once covered an area that stretched for approximately two and a half miles or four km.

The stones vary in height and the entire design is one that appears deliberate and well thought out. There are many theories as to why the stones are there. They are, like other sites, believed to have been set there as some kind of archaeological marking or measurement system but it is unknown how they were used to do so. Colorful legends say that the stones are placed so precisely because they are the petrified remains of a Roman legion that was turned to stone by Merlin.

The alignments are not the only site to see in the region. There are also many different tombs and megalithic monuments for history buffs to enjoy looking at. The area also contains many burial sites that date from the third and fourth century BCE. The megalithic monuments are known as “alles couverts”. As some can be difficult to find on your own, it is recommended that you obtain a map from a local tourist bureau in order to find what you are looking for in a reasonable amount of time.

If you are currently staying in Paris you can make the journey to Brittany on the TGV train. You would want to get off at the Auray stop, which is about three hours away from Paris. From there, it is easy to take a taxi or bus from Auray to the Carnac site. Some individuals will hire bikes or scooters to take them from alignment to alignment although renting a car is still possible as well.

The climate in Brittany is an interesting one. The weather in the area is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and this means that it can be cool and wet even at the height of summer. While in the area, you may want to try some of the local apple cider and enjoy the warmth and happiness of the area and the people who live there.

France Vacations – The Tourist’s Haven

The world’s capital of culture and the arts, of fine dining and wine, and of romance – France is all these and more. It is not surprising that France is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It is surrounded by Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. France has more or less 64 million people and over 500 kinds of cheese. No wonder they are cheesy.

Before embarking on a visit to France, it is best to know when the perfect time is. That of course depends on what you want to do there. If it is skiing, then you should be there during winter. The ski season runs between December and the middle of March. If you want to miss your fellow tourists crowding every corner, it is best to visit from April to June. The weather also is said to be best during these months because it is moderate especially in Paris. Summer is July and August. This is when you bump into foreigners like yourself. It is reassuring to see other people looking wonderfully lost in translation.

In visiting any country, it is wise to know as much of the language as you can. This holds true in France. Although the French people in cities can speak English, the same can not be said of those in the suburbs. Speaking the French language is tricky because it is not spoken the way it is written so it is advisable to write down basic phrases for greetings, directions, medical and dietary instructions if necessary. At least you can let them read if you can’t speak it properly.

When in France going around is not a problem. The French rail service is superb. A tourist can easily hop from city to city and town to town by rail. So unless you brought half of your closet, there is no need to rent a car or flag down a cab every time, both of which can be very expensive. It is highly advised to get a French rail pass if you plan to have more than a day of traveling or want to cover long distances via rail. It is much cheaper this way than getting French rail tickets from point to point.

If you are traveling on a budget or would like to save your money for souvenirs to remind you of your French trip, then it is wise to stay at a town nearby where you can stay in French cheap hotels. In France cheaper lodging does not mean uncomfortable and bad service. Sometimes it is nicer to stay at lower rated hotels than those a step higher. There are also vacation rentals which are much cheaper than hotels. This is advisable if you will be staying in a town for at least a week. You will not have the special services provided by a hotel though and you’d have to cook your food. Not so bad really. Another option is to go camping. Camping grounds in France are rated and they can be as plush as expensive hotels.

Nothing beats a dining experience in France. So instead of dining in your hotel, run to a café and experience French dining. Have the prix fixe menu where you will be served a complete course – starter, main dish, and dessert. You can also have wine served at a lower price. It is much enjoyable and costs much less too. After being satisfied, you still have change for tipping and you’ll appear generous.

If by chance you get invited to dinner, there are things you need to observe that are the opposite of what you know. Of course being punctual is a must and do not sit down before your host does. Wait to be seated and for the host to signal the start of the meal. Do not cut your salad; instead fold your leafy greens with your fork. If you do not want more wine, leave your glass nearly full.

Do not miss the French coffee experience. Coffee served in French cafés is considered one of the best. If you like it brewed, plain and strong, just say café. If you like it with steamed milk, ask for café au lait. If you prefer your coffee with cream, it’s café crème. Coffee served the American way is Café Americain. You will find that there are so many ways to serve your coffee. Choose one you like, sit back, sip and watch passersby while mulling on another trip to France.

How to Enjoy Airshows in England

When people think about visiting England they may be thinking that there are only historical sites that would be of interest. They couldn’t be more mistaken. There are many modern attractions that visitors can enjoy while they are in England. Airshows in England, for example, are great displays of modern technology that will both thrill and amaze visitors regardless of whether they are history buffs or want to see some truly modern aeronautical marvels.

Airshows tend to run between March and October. Many air force bases have them on a yearly basis. They tend to be scheduled so that they fall on different weekends which can give you the opportunity to travel from base to base and watching as you go. Some airshows feature modern planes such as Harrier jets in action. For plane enthusiasts this is phenomenal. Part of the draw of these airshows is that you can see planes in the air performing complex maneuvers and thrilling the crowd with their acrobatic abilities.

There are two much larger air shows that run each year. One is organized and put on by the Shuttleworth Collection. The second is put on by the Imperial War Museum. The Imperial War Museum Duxford not only has modern warcraft on display, it also has some older aircraft as well. Some have great military significance such as the Hurricane and the Spitfire. Both of these have had an important role to play in the aeronautic history of Britain during times of war.

Fans of American aircraft will not be disappointed by the display at the Imperial War Museum. A portion of the museum is set aside as the American Air Museum and many planes such as Mustangs are available for viewing. The American Air Museum is located on the same grounds as the Imperial War Museum. If you are visiting the Duxford museum you may want to check their schedule of events. The museum does have events every weekend as well as larger airshows that run four times a year.

The shows at Duxford can be fantastic for individuals who love modern aircraft. For others who want to see aviation in its infancy, the Shuttleworth Collection may be more enjoyable. Some of the aircraft that make up the Shuttleworth Collection date from the 1920’s and 1930’s while others were used in World War I. Some planes predate even this early period in aviation history. Even if you have seen aircraft from that period elsewhere it is likely that they were not in working condition. At the Shuttleworth Collection, you can see them in the air. The take offs and landings all take part on grassy ground in order to conform to the flying conditions at the time. One of Shuttleworth’s mandates is to keep as many of their aircraft in flying condition as possible. They open their doors to the public and hold shows as frequently as possible.

The airshows at the Shuttleworth Collection are not always held when scheduled simply because the flying conditions may not be right. If you are going up in a plane that is nearing one hundred years in age, you need to ensure that the proper weather and wind conditions are present. Even if you cannot see the craft in the air, it is still worth a trip to the facility in order to see them on the ground.

Both the Shuttleworth collection and the Imperial Museum can be visited in one day as they are located closely together enough to travel from one to the other. To reach the Shuttleworth collection, travel north from London on the A1 motorway. The collection is located a couple of miles off of the A1 approximately 48 kms (30 miles) from the city. It is located in Old Warden which is near Biggleswade. To reach the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, you will need to travel about 80 km (50 miles) from London along the M11 motorway.

Backpacking in France Travel Tips

Who says that a trip to France is just for newlyweds, honeymooners or those wanting a destination wedding? Contrary to common belief, France is also a great place to be explored and trekked by backpackers. And backpacking in France is not expensive either. By simply following easy tips for backpackers, you can have the best backpacking trip in France even if you are on a tight budget.

Getting a cheap flight to France is just the tip of the iceberg. Some tips for backpackers include being really flexible with dates. The best days to fly in a week are during the mid-week, never on weekends. When hurdling a holiday, opt for after the holiday and never before. You can also have a Christmas time backpacking trip if you want, but choose to fly between Christmas and New Year. Check out different days, you would be surprised at how much the costs differ from day to day.

Another money-saving tip for backpackers is to learn how to pack for traveling. Visit online forums and ask locals what to bring and what to wear during the time of your planned trip. You would not want to be caught freezing because all you brought with you are shirts and shorts. Or be caught fried under the blistering sun in your parkas and windbreakers. And of course, as a backpacker your backpack should be well equipped for the trip. You should have a backpack that you could trust to carry everything you need while on your backpacking trip to France. And you would be carrying your pack the whole day so ensure that your comfort is taken care of. Check that the pack has a contoured backing, padded shoulder and chest straps and hip belts.

When it comes to accommodations in France, opt for the cheaper modes. Stay away from hotels. The best bet, next to camping out of course, is to stay at youth hostels or dorms where you share a room with other people. Just be wary of your personal belongings though. Or you can even try a cheaper alternative, known as coachsurfing: you stay with locals who open up their homes for travelers. When it comes to dining, you can still experience French al fresco dining by just having a picnic. A typical restaurant will cost you about twenty to thirty Euros per meal, compared to buying your food and having a picnic by the parks which would just set you back forty Euros for the entire trip.

A trip to France will just not be complete without sampling a little about French culture. And as they say, when in Rome do as the Romans do. So when in France, do as the French do. The French get from one place to another through the trains. It is the cheapest and most reliable mode of transportation in France. So get yourself those budget train passes rather than buying individual tickets for each trip.

It would also be helpful if you learned some helpful phrases and say it in French language. A traveler’s guide about French language is a helpful and handy companion when you backpack in France. For really great places to visit in France, as a backpacker you should not miss Paris of course. It would be as if you never went to France at all. Be sure to at least set foot on the landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Seine and the Arc. Try to get into as many museums as you can too. If history class bored you, wait until you get to the D-day beaches in Normandy. It would be as if you were part of history already.

Trek off to the nearby The Palace of Versailles and marvel at true sampling of French culture and royalty. For a real French culture experience hop to the Loire Valley and see the wonderful vineyards then head off to a wine tasting tour in Bordeaux. And who says the clear blue waters of Southern France are just for the elite? Anyone can enjoy Saint Tropez and bask in its glorious sea, sand and sun. You may even get to hang out with the celebrities you idolize! With just a few and simple backpacking travel tips, you can turn your vacation in France better than joining expensive guided vacation tours. Bon voyage!

How to Have a France Destination Wedding Even on a Budget

Getting engaged is a milestone in one’s life that is worthy of being celebrated. But the ultimate event in a couple’s life is the wedding itself. While it would be every bride’s dream to have a France destination wedding, most couples steer clear from the idea of getting married abroad as a whole due to budgetary reasons. But with some help and a little ingenuity on the part of the couple, a destination wedding France is possible and you can even throw in fantastic France honeymoon destinations.

Since France in general, and all of its twenty two regions, is already considered a really romantic place to get hitched, a soon to be wed couple need not use any 5 star beach resorts. The best way to snag a romantic accommodation in France without going overboard with the budget is to be a bit unconventional. And it would be a safe bet that it would even beat any conventional luxury hotels or resorts. Try renting out villas in France or a whole chateau. A little research will even yield a cheaper option if you rent out a whole castle.

A rule of thumb for budget wedding destinations is to stay away from the popular destinations in France. So do not bother searching for the best cities to visit in France or the best destinations in France. These places will just ruin your budget and your dream of having a France destination wedding as a whole. Besides, a wedding in Paris in France is too much of a cliché already. What you should be looking out for is where to go in France that is not too overrated. Those places in France that are not as popular. In France, even if it is not popular, it will still hold the French charm everyone looks for.

It may sound contrary to the goal of having a France destination wedding on a budget, but hiring a local wedding planner will actually help you achieve just that. Compared to blindly taking control and making decisions in a foreign land, these wedding planners will help you plan the ultimate France destination wedding even if you are on a budget.

For starters however, you should plan your France destination wedding during the off peak season. In France, the off peak season is during winter and spring. But you would not want to freeze during winter so your safest bet is spring. Then of course choose a place to visit in France that is not on top of must see places of each and every tourist. That means, no to the Arc de Triomphe Champs Elysees. But you can still squeeze in the Eiffel tour and maybe a visit to the Moulin Rouge, the museum of Louvre and the place de la Concorde. But do so after the wedding. Make these places a stop when you are already on your honeymoon.

Before you book the hotel, remember to compare prices for hotels. And steer clear of looking for the most romantic hotels because these specialty hotels will surely cost extra. For your guests, do not worry about budget airlines. Hey, you already are giving them a French vacation just by attending your wedding. They’d already be thankful just being invited.

Of course a France destination wedding will just not be complete without sampling the food in France. Just be careful though, you would not want to spend money on food that your guests will not eat. So remember not to be too adventurous. And just because it sounds nice, it does not mean it looks nice.

The icing on the cake on your France destination wedding will be the honeymoon which would also be great if spent in France. To help the newlyweds save money, it is advisable to hire a car. This way the couple can have the romantic French adventure they want in privacy. All they need are maps of the country and they can choose to visit the French Alps, the Loire Valley, or check out the weather in Nice. Or after sampling the weather in the French Riviera, they may want to sample all the wines of Burgundy or the wines of the Loire Valley that they can handle.

A scenic drive through the Riviera Corniches in France

Many people enjoy driving the Riviera Corniches because they are challenging and because the scenery is so beautiful. The Corniches are three roads that hug the coast. All three follow the same stretch but at different levels on the mountain side. All three Corniches are approximately 20 to 30 miles (32 to 50 km) in length. They link Nice, France to Monaco and on to Cap Martin and Menton, which lies on the Italian border.

Ancient history buffs may want to travel the Grande Corniche which is the highest of the three roads. Napoleon began building it and followed the Roman Aurelian Way. This road weaves in and out of the mountains, which means that you only get sea views for part of the time. You will find some of the most beautiful views along this route especially when travelling the 11 mile (18 km) stretch between La Turbie and Nice.

If you are not feeling adventurous enough to try the high road you may want to try the Moyenne Corniche. The medieval town of Eze is located along this road. It is a great place to stop. Many tourists choose to stop there and enjoy walking the labyrinthine tangle of narrow streets. The town is perched above the Mediterranean. You will be able to get some spectacular pictures in this village because it is perched on a rocky outcropping and the vistas are spectacular.

In Eze you will find many different restaurants and cafes simply because the town does cater to tourists. It is also where some well-known hotels are located although these tend to be expensive much like the restaurants are.

The third road is known as the Basse Corniche or Corniche Inferieure. This was once a coastal road that connected numerous towns and villages. It is also positioned between steep mountain sides and the Mediterranean Sea. You may also want to try taking photographs at this level as the perspective will be quite different than from the other two roads.

You may want to try and combine a trip along more than one of the roads. It is possible to switch from one to another as they do intersect in some of the villages. Switching from the Moyenne Corniche to the Corniche Inferieure and then driving back along the Grande Corniche can be a wonderful trip that will be full of great memories.

You may find that April and May are the best times to visit. The Mediterranean climate makes it hospitable all year long but it tends to be much more crowded throughout July and August. This is because these months tend to be when many Europeans take a month long vacation.

If you do not like the idea of staying in Eze there are many other towns that offer great atmosphere and have places to stay as well. Some of the more popular villages include Menton, La Turbie, Roquebrune, Cap Martin and Cap Ferrat. Other people choose to stay in Beaulieu, Cap d’Ail, Monte Carlo or Villefranche-sur-Mer.

If this thrilling and beautiful journey sounds like something you would like to see for yourself, you can easily reach this region by travelling from Provence to northern Italy or you can choose to reach it from one of the many French towns.

How to travel safely as women and students

Unfortunately; women and students particularly young ones are more likely to be involved in a crime against them when travelling in Europe. They also are more likely to have problems and difficulties with certain government officials and possibly trouble with locals. So it is because of this that any women or student traveling through and in Europe should follow a few easy safety tips.

If you’re a student you are travelling to Europe there are some things you should keep in mind when you do travel. Not every person you come across can be trusted, no matter how nice they may seem at first. It pays to be a little wary of everyone you meet who you do not know. This is an important first tip; don’t give out your trust too easily and be a little wary of all people.

It always pays to learn a little of the countries language before you travel; this way if you do get into trouble you can at least understand or speak to people who don’t speak too much English. You will be able to get directions and communicate easier with the people around you. No one is saying you have to be fluent in the language; just learn as much as you can to be safer. Learn particular phrases that you may need such as, where is the police station, where is the hotel, where is the US embassy and such like.

Make sure you are up on all the laws and cultures of the country that you are visiting on your trip. Don’t go overboard with the partying and be respectful of the locals and other tourists. Don’t take drugs and try not to drink so you become drunk; you need to keep hold of your wits when you’re in a foreign country; then you won’t fall victim to crimes against you or become involved I a situation where you end up being arrested by local police.

Never walk out on your own at night; particularly if you’re a women or a young student. Always get licensed taxis if you’re on your own or if you can rent a car and use that instead. Or you could always go out in a large group so you’re never alone.

Always keep what you are carrying well hidden on your body; if your iPod or cell phone is on view; you are making yourself prime for mugging and attacking. Try and hide cash somewhere where they won’t look or won’t have time to look, such as your shoes or stuck to your frame somehow. The less it looks like you have valuables the better as you’re a less likely target. If you do get mugged or attacked; scream for help and run to closest well lit area or lit house for safety and get the police involved immediately.

St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland: Legends Galore!

There are a few reasons why most people in Ireland wear green on St Patrick’s Day. This is part of the celebration and is considered a tradition every year. Another tradition is that on this day you can ask people to kiss you! This day is a time of fun and being just a little bit silly. Below are some things you might want to know about this important Irish celebration.

St. Patrick is believed to have died on March 17th, and this is why that date was chosen as St. Patrick’s Day. The celebration is always held on that date.

Legend has it that St. Patrick drove away all the snakes in Ireland, however the story is just the result of people’s exaggeration. Irish people claim that there are no snakes in their country, however the story is hard to believe.

St. Patrick escaped to Britain from Ireland, and returned a priest after a number of years’ absence.

The first St. Patrick’s parade was actually held in the US (in New York) in 1762, and not in Ireland. This celebration is still a very important one for Americans.

A phrase you will hear often during the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations is ‘Erin go bragh’, which means ‘Ireland forever’.

In Ireland, it is believed that if a person kisses the Blarney stone, then they will receive the ‘gift of the gab’. This is a popular story amongst the Irish, and is therefore part of the annual celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland.

The majority of Irish people are Christian, particularly Catholic, however divorce was legalized there in 1995 following a referendum. This desire of the people to legalize divorce is quite surprising given the Christian view of marriage as being a sacred state.

One of the fun activities of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is the drinking of green beer. So try some green beer and ask people to kiss you, and have fun! You should also wear some green, or you might find that people pinch you. Don’t forget to observe the religious nature of the occasion, too, however.

There is much to learn about St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland. Have fun joining in with people as they celebrate the occasion, whether you are in Ireland or elsewhere in the world. Wear a touch of green and watch the parade which is the start of the festivities. Be part of the event and enjoy yourself together with all the other people who recognize the importance and fun of this special day.

It’s important not to forget St. Patrick himself on this day, though. Irish people always take a little time to pray and to thank the saint for having brought Christianity to their land. St. Patrick is an important part of Irish history, and thanks to the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, and elsewhere around the world, he will not be forgotten. If you want to know more about St. Patrick or his day, then have a look at the many websites which explain the background and traditions surrounding the occasion.

How to prepare for the European Climate

You may have your vacation or travel plans to Europe booked and you are ready to go; however to fully enjoy your European holiday, you need to make sure you have clothes to suit the climate your going into. The weather when in Europe is generally more stable and easy to plan for then when you’re in the US. Mainly as the winters are not as bitterly cold as they are in the States and the summers are nowhere nearly as hot. You will still need to dress accordingly and take the right items to really get the best out of your holiday.

If you’re planning on going in the summer, then you will need some warm clothing to wear on the evenings as they can get quite cold at times. Even the days in the summer can be chilly so it’s always best to have a jumper and some jeans to wear just in case. You may have a really great holiday in the summer and have nothing but clear blue skies where the sun shines all day. If this is the case (and you won’t know until you get there); take some cooler clothes and a few pairs of shorts and some cool shirts/t-shirts.

Days in Europe can be quite rainy at times; so make sure you take some clothing that is either waterproof or that can dry easily. Europe has less rainfall usually than the States; but rain showers in the summer can be common in Europe so just take some clothing to suit this just in case. An umbrella may be required as well; or you could buy one when you get there, that way you don’t have to pack it and take room up in your cases.

In Europe the winter days are shorter than in the summer so warm clothing will be needed because of this and in the summer as the days are longer and generally warmer; cooler clothes are going to be needed instead. The sun sets quite late when its summer so if you like to go to bed quite early then either book a hotel that has lined curtains or take an eye mask to sleep in so your sleep doesn’t get disturbed.

The best and easiest way to check what clothing you will more than likely need is to check weather forecasts on the internet. These are easily found and you can specify whereabouts in Europe you will be and see what the weather forecast is. Check the weather on the day of your flight if you can; this way you can dress appropriately for the flight and when you arrive at your destination.

If you are travelling around Europe for a while then it can be difficult to estimate what the weather is going to be like. You could always check the year before weather forecast to see what the weather was like at the time of your holiday. This can be useful but it is not always set in stone as weather is constantly changing. You may have the use of the internet in your hotel or hostel, so if you can check there online and see what the weather is like in your next destination.

Try to take at least one or two outfits for every weather eventuality. This way you will be prepared whether rain or shine!

How to deal with jet lag efficiently

When you’re traveling to Europe on your holidays; you travel through various time zones on your way there. This can leave you with a dreadful first day of your holidays and maybe more as you recover and get used to the new time zones. Then you have to go through it all again when you travel back home to the States. Don’t despair to much however as there are many ways to help you get over jet lag very quickly or perhaps not suffer at all. You should always know a lot about where you are traveling to on your holidays in Europe; make sure you don’t leave preparing for jet lag out of your entire trip preparations.

A great way to help you not get any jet lag is to sleep during the flight. You may have problems sleeping on planes and during the flights so try and over the counter sleeping remedy. Don’t use them for the first time when you fly however; try them at home first and make sure you have no adverse reactions to them. They can be carried on the plane in your hand held luggage so you then have them at only an arm’s reach away if you need them.

Many people have recommended melatonin to use when you fly to help overcome jet lag. Again always try it beforehand to make sure you don’t have any reactions that are unwanted to the remedy. It can cause side effects such as nausea, sickness, and can sometimes in extreme cases cause serious nightmares and night terrors.

Have you thought about changing your sleeping routine before you actually go on holiday? Start trying to sleep on your holiday destinations time zone and get used to it before you even get there. When you’re traveling to Europe for your holidays, get up earlier in the morning than normal and go to bed earlier at night. When you’re traveling back again, simply reverse the actions and get used to your own time zone again.

If you do get to your holiday destination and you do have jet lag then keep yourself safe by resting before you push yourself too hard. You may make yourself feel ill if you keep trying to push through the jetlag, take time to rest before you start going out and exploring your destination.

Jet lag can make you less aware of what is happening around you and make you venerable and a prime suspect for mugging and pick pockets. If you don’t think that you’re up to going out and shopping, eating or whatever it is you want to do; then don’t. Take time to rest and recuperate as your health and safety is paramount when in a foreign country.

Don’t start handling money and currency exchanges when you’re feeling low and jet lagged; you are a prime suspect for being scammed or a victim of crime. Take your first day to sit in the hotel or your room and just take in your surroundings and get used to where you are.

Enjoy A Feast On St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland

Memorial days and feasts feature in the calendar of every country. In particular, the special feast day of certain saints are celebrated by locals and tourists alike. One example of this is St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland.

This feast day is celebrated all over the world in March each year. People from other countries travel to Ireland, as well as other countries which recognize the event. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and even people in special positions and government do not work on this day. St. Patrick’s Day is also an important occasion in Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

St. Patrick’s Day is a feast day which is celebrated in the Catholic church. The events which characterize this occasion are typically connected with the color green. People everywhere, whether locals or tourists, wear green or orange. Even drinks and foods are sometimes colored green for the occasion. The Irish people seem to have a high tolerance for alcohol, and this occasion is for them a time to be merry, and to eat and drink as they please.

Until the influence of St. Patrick, the people of Ireland were pagan. St. Patrick, a priest, then decided to introduce Christianity into the country. He used a three leaved clover, or shamrock, to help the people to understand the notion of the Holy Trinity. The leaf is just one leaf, yet three, and this is how the Holy Trinity is as well – though divided into three (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit), it is still all the one God. This was of great assistance in assisting people to comprehend the notion of the Holy Trinity, and at the same time it was the reason for the importance of the color green in connection with St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland.

There are various types of food consumed in Irish homes at this time of year. Any celebration is connected with particular foods, and only the best should be served, if you are to make the most of the occasion. All families, but especially Christian ones, like to celebrate the importance of this feast day.

Delicious foods are one of the best ways of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, in fact the occasion isn’t complete is you don’t have these. The foods which are usually served are not usually too heavy, particularly if given to children. Nevertheless you are likely to have a full stomach by the end of the day. Snacks for children can be quite easily prepared; for example pizza with green vegetables on top, or cabbage served with corned beef. Americans and Irish both love this type of snack food. Various foods are often seen colored green on St. Patrick’s Day, because it is symbolic of the unity of the shamrock and the trinity, and this is also why families get together for the occasion.

Another idea for snacks for children is to bake green cookies. If you like cooking, and enjoy being creative, then give it a go. St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland can be lots of fun to celebrate, especially for children. The delicious foods are a big part of this. Green foods can be extra fun, and everyone will surely have a full stomach by the day’s end.

Oft Overlooked Romantic European Getaways in Turkey, Spain and Germany

Not many people have heard of Cappadocia, but it’s one of the finest examples of an overlooked European getaway for romantics. Located in Turkey, it is regarded as a place of natural beauty and well worth a visit whether you’re with your lover or a fellow lover of ancient history. Archeology buffs will love Cappadocia, also known as the beautiful horses’ land. As part of Asia Minor, it has been occupied by Hittites, Persians, and Romans, all of whom made the mark in the area.

Hotels in the region often have rooms carved out of the volcanic rock. There are also underground cities – Kaymakli and Derinkuyu. Byzantine frescoes are to be found in churches that also have been hewn from the caves and there are geological features known as fairy chimneys. These geological formations are located in Goreme National Park. There are also hot air balloon rides available. The balloon rides are a wonderful way to take in the unusual landscape of the national park. Turkey straddles both Europe and Asia, so it’s a great country to visit if you want to see a fine mix of cultures.

Castilla la Marcha in Spain is another destination for romantics. The word quixotic means impractically romantic and chivalrous and the word stems from the novel Don Quixote by Cervantes. The novel itself is set in Castilla la Marcha. The novel features the windmills that can be found in the area and there are fields of sunflowers and many castles there too.

The windmills have a starring role in the novel. Also found in the area is the World Heritage Site of Toledo and it is a fantastic destination for romantics. With its architecture of synagogues and cathedrals, palaces and fortresses, Toledo is well worth a tour. It also features Arab architecture and a palace called Alcazar that was once held by the Romans. The River Tagus can be seen beneath Toledo which is located on a mountaintop, and its panoramic view is best observed at Parador de Toledo, a manor house.

Fussen in Germany is a town found at the bottom of the Bavarian Alps and it is regarded as a very scenic area. A picture postcard place for lovers of fairy tales and medieval towns, its lakes and beautiful castles won’t disappoint. Neuschwanstein Castle is just one of the many places to visit and it is a major draw for tourists and visitors to the region.

The castle is also renowned as hopeless romantic and fairy tale King Ludwig II’s residence, as well as the inspiration for the castle to be found in the Sleeping Beauty story. The Hohenschwangau is also nearby. Fussen is thought to be the birthplace of both the European lute and the violin. Concerts of all sorts are staged in the area, so there may be one on during your stay. Also available are any number of workshops for tourists to learn about the trades that for many years helped to run the economy.

When people think of a romantic European destination, they may believe that places such as Venice, Paris and Rome are the three cities of most importance when it comes to love. But frequently overlooked travel destinations in Turkey, Spain, Germany, and elsewhere, are can be equally romantic.

How to Verify Your Citizenship ? Visas and Passport

Whenever you travel from your home country you will need a passport to go to any other foreign country. You may have a passport already so you need to ensure that it’s in date and valid and that it won’t run out while you’re on your holiday. If your passport is going to run out soon always renew your passport before you travel. Renewals are much easier than applying for a new one. Make sure you get your passport ready and any visa you may need at least 2 months before you travel.

If you’re getting a new passport then it could take many weeks to arrive especially if you apply for it during High Holiday periods such as summer or at Christmas time. To get a new passport you will have to go and apply will two recent photographs, proof of your citizenship in the US and any photo id that is recommended such as a driver’s license or an identity card.

Most European countries won’t require you to have a visa to go there for a vacation. France for example doesn’t need you to have a visa. It is only if you’re planning on staying or travelling there for 3 months or over that you will need a visa. Always make sure you apply for it months in advance so that you get it back and completed in plenty of time for your vacation plans. Always make sure you don’t need a visa when you’re travelling to Europe; contact your local embassy to make sure what you do and don’t need to travel to Europe.

Some people face emergencies when they travel to Europe; this is unfortunate but it does happen sometimes. You may bet robbed or mugged, you may lose some luggage or you may lose your passport or your visa. Always make copies of any important documents such as your visas and passports so you can prove who you are should you end up needing to.

If your passport and your visas are lost or stolen there are certain things that need to be done to make sure you can stay in Europe and return safely to your home in the US. Firstly go to the closest US embassy that is to where you are and then apply for new documents. You will also have to write and then sign what is known as an Affidavit; this will show all the relevant details about whether the passport and visas were lost or stolen. You may have to use other documents to prove who you are.

You will not be able to return home to the US if you don’t have a passport. Contact the embassy as soon as you think you have lost or been mugged for your passport. This will be vital in your safety and help you get back home or continue travelling safely. It is not difficult to get a new passport when you’re in European countries; even so it should be an immediate decision to report it lost or stolen.

Europe Is For Romance

Europe has always been the romantic venue of choice by many people all over the world. The banks of the Seine and the lights of Pairs, the Eiffel Tower and the streetside cafes, to name a few, have been dreamed of by starstruck lovers and ecstatic honeymooners. In Italy the gondola rides of Venice continue to be favorites, while Switzerland has its Lake Geneva and the Alps for the romantic tourists. Germany entices couples along the Danube, with the ancient castles and the breathtaking mountainscapes of Bavaria, while Holland still has its acres of tulip fields and levees decorated with functioning old-style windmills.

Currency is no problem in Europe, where the dollar remains strong and continue to be the main medium of international monetary exchange; language is no barrier as most everyone understand English; transportation and accommodations the least of all troubles. So many airlines operate flights to Europe every day, rail lines crisscross the continent and there are hotels, pensions, inns and out-of-the-way cottages in every conceivable form and service level there is absolutely something for anyone going to Europe as a romantic getaway. Indeed the only problem in going there is to decide which place to go first.

The solution to this problem may be found in what you intend to do while on the romantic vacation. History buffs can start with Germany, Poland and Central Europe; music lovers with Paris; while the religious always begin with Rome and the Vatican. Winter sports vacationers usually target the Alps of Switzerland, and art lovers do well with the Louvre Museum in Paris and Prado in Spain.

In going to Europe for a vacation (or anywhere for that matter) there are several reminders worth taking note of. The tips will make your trips more enjoyable and the preparation less hassling, minimizing the problems and mishaps vacationers normally experience in going anywhere.

1. Plan your trip in detail- Once you have decided where to go, find as much information about the place you’re going to. Unless you have been there before, there should be many things you may need to know, such as transportation options, hotel rates and alternative places, distances to places you wish to visit and the relative amounts of time needed to go from one venue to another. There is no use planning going to five places in a day when you have time only for two or thereabouts. Visiting a place also means seeing it, not only getting there.

2. Book in advance your flights and accommodations- Most especially during peak tourist season and as much as possible, unless you are the adventurous kind like college students on a lark. Prior to finalizing your reservations, however, it is good to research for alternative places and airlines. Ask friends who have travelled to your intended places and inquire what they think of the hotel or airline. Also, do not be afraid to ask at your alternative hotel what they think about your choice, their competitor. But a few days before your departure confirm your reservations just to be sure.

3. Travel as light as possible- There is no point in getting harassed by minding your luggage and tipping overworked bellboys and porters. Unless you are going to a gala gathering, take only a few formal clothes and much informal outfits with you. You can always buy what you need in any city you go to.

4. Study the language- A few phrases in the native language can do wonders to get you along beautifully with the locals. There is also an advantage if you understand what they are talking about without letting them know it. Sometimes you get juicy secrets that way.

These are just a few practical tips on how to enjoy a romantic European vacation, and there are many others. However, the best one is, once you made preparations the best you can, simply enjoy your vacation and make romance while there. It is then purpose of the vacation anyhow, lest you forget.
