Economists predicted that the current economic situation in the United States would force many to forego certain luxuries like traveling. There is, however, a very big difference between merely traveling and traveling smart. If you can learn and manage to do the latter, then your traveling plans don’t have to fear economic slumps. In fact, smart travelers can simply fly through this ailing economy – even if it means flying economy.
Research vs. Recession
Believe it or not, ten minutes with your favorite search engine could drastically improve your chances of traveling well, recession or no. Knowing exactly where to go and how to get there will considerably cut down your expenses. You can further reduce costs by planning the most efficient schedule around given variables.
Say, for example, that you wanted to go somewhere that had casinos and good shopping centers around it. If you were to do a simple Internet search, you’d find out that Las Vegas fits the bill perfectly. And if you were to search just a little more thoroughly, you’d see that many Las Vegas hotels and inns give you free shuttle services around the city, saving you gas and transportation money. A little research can go a long, long way.
Your research can also give you information about promotions, special packages, discounted rates and other ways to save money while traveling. Many companies and establishments post notices about promotions online, so you’ll be able to see where and how you can get really good deals. And because you know about them beforehand, you can plan your trip so as to be able to maximize those deals, saving bundles in the process.
Early Birds Get the Bargains
Ever since the e-commerce became popular, it’s become easy to book immediate flights over the Internet, especially from the United States. As convenient as this practice might be, you are actually cheating yourself of a lot of money when you do this. Airlines, hotels and travel agents jack up their rates whenever you try to get a booking on short notice. In short, you’ll get better rates the earlier you book your flights and plan your trips.
Some other sources might say that airlines also offer rock bottom rates when you wait for the absolute last minute to book. With the cost-cutting measures that airline companies are now implementing, however, this isn’t the case anymore. Booking way ahead of time is still the best and surest way of getting cheap flights. How long ahead is long enough? At least two months ahead of time should still yield cheaper than usual tickets for you.
Accommodations and tours are also usually cheaper when you make arrangements or reservations long before you intend to avail of them. Hotels and inns are often more flexible when negotiating discounts or perks when you book far ahead of time. In the case of tours or certain activities at your destination, slots run out eventually; you might not even be able to join if you book at the last minute.
Just because the economy is down it does not mean that you will have to shelve your travel plans for the moment. The financial trouble is simply more reason for you to start traveling smartly.
