Yuma, Arizona: Top Warm Winter Vacation Destination
The name Arizona probably came from the words ‘arid zone’, indicating a ‘hot, dry and dusty’ area. That is Arizona in summer, when temperatures can rise to 120 degrees in the shade, and admittedly, it is not very inviting except perhaps to a few lizards and desert scorpions. But when winter comes, Arizona can be very comfortable at 80 degrees average temperature, and that is the main reason Arizona —particularly Yuma— is a top warm winter vacation destination in the continental United States.
Situated in the Sonoran Desert in southwest Arizona, Yuma offers varied sports possibilities —plus other pursuits— for the new and returning warm winter vacation-goer. For outdoor enthusiasts, there is the trekking of Kofa Mountain Range, ending at a visit at the Wildlife Refuge. Fishing is also popular at the Martinez and Mittry Lakes for those interested in piscatorial pursuits. Just be prepared for both flyfishing and more conventional fishing forms, as choices are possible depending on the local situations.
The Colorado River also bisects Yuma, adding to its fishing potentials. The river also hosts more than 380 species of birds, a big boon for birdwatchers and avid naturalists who can observe the birds in their natural habitat. For history buffs, there is the Territorial Prison and the Yuma Crossing Historic Park to visit, both vital in the history of Arizona and southwestern United States.
Getting to Yuma and exploring its environs can be made via recreational vehicles (RVs). There are hundreds of RV parks you can use to get near whichever area of Yuma you wish: Colorado River-side which can be always full so you need to get there early in the season, or some farther place off it. The parks have cable TV connection so you need not lose touch with the world while in Yuma for your warm winter vacation.
Alternative activities may be short trips to Mexico on the south or California on the west, both of them offering cultural scenarios significantly different from the usual experience. Arizona was formerly part of the Mexican Empire as was California, so that noticeable traces of Mexican culture can be discerned in Arizona. But of course, for authentic Mexican culture —and cuisine, mind you— real Mexico is just a few miles away. On longer trips, the more beautiful beaches of Mexico or California are reachable destinations for you to enjoy your best winter beach alternative vacation ever.
So if ever you want to keep your cold-weather clothes in the closet this winter, consider Yuma, Arizona as your snowbird destination, the warm weather winter vacation option. You’ll find a lot of activities to do there to keep you busy and your vacation enjoyable, ranging from sporting to educational, from strenuous to light. California and Mexico are nearby, secondary places you can go for a change of environment, or for exploration and study. Yuma’s weather also remains comfortable during winter so you need not worry about any health problems while there. Yuma as your warm weather winter vacation locale can give you the best warm winter vacation you can experience. So, why not, eh?
