The Festivals of Louisiana You Should Not Miss
Of all 50 states, Louisiana is probably has the greatest number of fairs and festivals to offer the tourist. Every quarter of the year, one or several fairs, festivals and carnivals is held somewhere in the state, ranging from simple sports-based series of activities through food and finally revelry-making. The choices are eclectic and the events are truly enjoyable.
The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair for a cause
Foods galore, live music, magic shows and carnival rides characterize the Baton Rouge State Fair, which began in 1987. It is held usually October or November at the State Fairgrounds in the city’s outskirts, and organized to support youth-oriented causes of the city and its residents. So synchronize your visit of Baton Rouge with the fair the next time and you will contribute to a worthy cause.
Mandeville means seafood!
You can never imagine the varieties of seafoods and tastes of the dishes until you’ve been to the Mandeville Seafood Festival of Louisiana. There you will be treated to a bewildering array of seafood dishes and the different cooking styles of Louisiana’s citizens, showcasing their talents and resources. And if you get tired of eating, there are also live music, display of arts and crafts, and entertainment for children and the fireworks to round out the festival.
The Sugar Bowl games
Football is one of the top -if not the top-sports in the country, at least in the college level. And when it comes to college football contests, almost nothing beats the Sugar Bowl games. Held at the New Orleans Louisiana Superdome, it is the final battles of college football circuit champions and displays the best players and games state-wide and perhaps nation-wide. The Sugar Bowl games date back to 1935, and considered one of the longest-running sports series, particularly for football.
Louisiana State Fair and Zoo for the family
The Louisiana State Fair is one much-anticipated series of festivities in the state. Various modes of amusement from thrilling rides like the carousel, Ferris wheel, minirides, some whale rides for the intrepid, to foods galore as well as Spongebob and Castlemania will bring full enjoyment to children and parents alike.
On the other hand, the State Fair Zoo displays animals of different species for people to interact with. It aims to familiarize the visitors, especially the children, with the various animals for conservation and environment purposes. There are also the Circus Hollywood featuring acts from Hollywood performers, the Extreme Canine Stunt Dog Show that showcases incredible dog performances, the Giant Alligator and Crocodile Exhibit which is all about the large reptiles, and a few others, including cooking shows, clown show and haunted house tour.
The North American Mardi Gras
It has been dubbed THE CARNIVAL of North America: the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Similar but not identical to that of Rio de Janeiro’s, the New Orleans “Fat Tuesday’ Carnival also features parades, brass bands, colorful buntings, more colorful costumes of revelers, different musical concerts and performances, and the obligatory private and public parties for the nights. The New Orleans Mardi Gras is an old tradition, from the 1780s and Medieval Europe.
