Enjoy Illinois on a Recession-Proof Vacation

Going on a vacation during this time of economic recession puts off a lot of potential tourists. When money is tight, expenses must be reduced, is the rationale. That is well and good, but there are enjoyable vacations one can take without spending much, so that one need not deprive himself of enjoying a respite just because budget is small. One of these destinations is Illinois.

For history buffs

In Springfield, Illinois stands the two-story home of Abraham Lincoln, the only one he owned. He lived there with his wife Mary stating 1844 until he became President in 1861. A tour of the 1 1/2 storey cottage will give the visitor a glimpse of how life was in the 1800′s, as well as the austerity of Honest Abe.

Another home of interest is that granted to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant by grateful Galena, Illinois citizens celebrating his return. He lived there also until his election to the presidency in 1868. Tours of the Grant house is conducted by guides wearing historical costumes.

Outdoor activities

The Shawnee National Forest is an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers rock-climbing (of unique sandstone formations), hiking the River-to-River Trail which connects the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, lakes to fish, and campgrounds to enjoy the Garden of the Gods, a wilderness area of 320-million years old forest and interesting rock formations.

The Pine Ridge Campgrounds offer boating and fishing on the lake, swimming, trails for hiking and geological areas to explore. Horseback riding, on the other hand, is available at the Johnson Creek Campgrounds in Ava, Illinois along Lake Kincaid, which also affords great fishing.

But for a really integrated lake-based activity vacation, go to Carlyle Lake in Clinton County. Camping can be in cabins or walk-in tents that you can rent, rather than bringing your own gear. Bass, crappie, bluegill, walleye, catfish and sauger abound in the lake so there are excellent fishing opportunities. The average density is claimed to be 3,260 pounds of fish in every water acre.

There are also nine miles to hike, while hunting is allowed for white-tailed deer, squirrels, rabbits, mourning doves, turkeys and bobwhite quail. Shorebirds, songbirds, ducks, geese, eagles, cormorants, blue herons and ospreys will also delight birdwatchers who stroll the lakeshore or hike the trails.

An unusual trip

Very similar to the riverboat cruises of the earlier times, the more modern Shawnee Queen River Taxi takes 48 passengers along a scenic Ohio River trip, stopping at the towns of Golconda, Rosiclare and Elizabethtown for shopping, and Cave-in Rock for a little pirate history of the Mason Gang. Golconda also offers excellent fishing opportunities.

There is also the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the one of the largest aquarium in the world, and maintains 20,000 fish for viewing. More than two million people visit the aquarium every year, making it one very popular Illinois destination indeed. Coupled with the nearby Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum Campus where the three sites are located is quite busy everyday so book your visit early.

Go Illinois!

So if you really want an enjoyable vacation on a shoestring (almost anyway), go Illinois. The camping is easy and the opportunities are plenty. Forget the luxurious hotels and welcome the tents; forget the usual activities and go nature, and you will have the best vacation… in Illinois.

Discover San Antonio In Texas

Not every tourist’s attraction is in the big cities. For a taste of Mexican, Native American and southern culture, head on over to San Antonio and experience something unique those big cities like New York or San Francisco can’t offer.

Historically one of America’s oldest cities, San Antonio was first colonized by Spain in the early 1700’s. A visit there would not be complete if you didn’t visit it’s most famous tourist attraction…which is the Alamo. History buffs would remember it as the place of an epic battle during the Texas Revolution in 1836.

The Alamo is actually quite small since it was built as a mission rather than a fort. Remember Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie? Well a walk here should give you a feel of the battle that they fought there all those years ago. The place is near the River Walk, right in the heart of town.

There are four more missions aside the Alamo if you’re interested. There is a Bike and Hike Trail for the other four missions if you visit the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. Further downtown is The River Walk. Here along the river there are various restaurants, museums and historical sites for the leisure seeking traveller. The River Walk (also known as Paseo Del Rio) has a river cruise you could take; this cruise lasts for a couple of miles and you can have a tour guide giving you more detailed information of the surrounding location.

You can also find the historic district of La Villita along the banks of the river. This site has its significance in history in that it was the place the Mexican army surrendered and gave Texas its independence back in 1835. Originally built by Spanish soldiers, the historic buildings have now been turned into tourists’ attractions for arts and craft. There are even restaurants in the surrounding area. It is interesting to know that the following year in 1836 the Battle of the Alamo occurred there.

Got a taste for Mexico? Head on over to the Historic Market Square downtown, there are all kinds of trinkets and colourful jewellery, real Mexican necklaces and earrings which are handmade, and also belts and buckles. You will hear the sound of mariachis as you relax by the nearby fountain, satisfy your sweet tooth with Mexican candies and even stuff them in a piñata.

A walk has never been as fun by walking the streets of San Antonio. Barbeque lovers will have their taste buds in for a treat with the great combination of Texan and Mexican food here. If you’re looking for great food while being able to explore a rich history, San Antonio is the place to go.

Enjoy Kansas Vacation for Less

If you are thinking of a vacation in Kansas, but having second thoughts due to expenses, well, we got good news: you can enjoy Kansas for less than the usual budget. With some detailed planning and advance information, you can go to many different places in Kansas and enjoy what you wish to see or do. The options are almost endless.

A Selection of Destinations and Activities

For example, outdoor enthusiasts will love to get near the bison of American legends in the wildlife refuges and the state’s Flint Hills. To see the animal up close is to feel its raw power and imagine how it was thousands of years ago, when they roamed the immensity of the tallgrass prairie like an unstoppable flood. The bison is an American historical icon as well as nature’s gift in a large package.

Amateur paleontologists can tour the museums of dinosaur and sea- monster fossils. The tour is a four-day adventure trip through several sites that includes a look at the unusually unique rock formations in Marquette’s Mushroom State park, and the ‘underwater’ butte and arches of the Monument Rocks in Scott City and Oakley. There are mosasaurs, fossil fish, crinoids, and several T-Rex exhibits to marvel at during the tour.

There is also a unique museum in Topeka, Kansas that will fascinate those interested in war and warcraft: the Combat Air Museum. Among the popular exhibits inside are the German Prisoner of War (POW) room; the Skynight, a fold-wing Korean war fighter; a escape capsule of the F-111 Stealth aircraft; and a Tiger aircraft of the famous Air Force’s Blue Angels acrobatic team. The artworks on aviation, a WWII ambulance, the jeep and framed photographs will impress on any visitor the role aviation played in the defense of the country and freedom.

Meanwhile, Holton’s ghost tour of two inns, the cemetery and the haunted country club is limited to visitors 12 years or older. This is probably to avoid undue impression of ghost stories in the minds of youngsters. The ghosts include a pilot, a young man, and a Viking tossing stones into the Elk Horn Lake. Maybe you would see them, too?

Kansas Waits for You
The preceding are just suggestions of what you can do and where you can go on a vacation in Kansas. There are plenty of other destinations and activities, including specialty pursuits like fly fishing, though not for trout. But one can explore the potentials of fly fishing for the sunfish family species in the county state lakes of Bourbon, Pottawatomie, Chase and the Cowley Elm Creek Lake as well. May, June and December are the recommended months to flyfish in Kansas.

So go to Kansas on your next vacation. To cut your budget, skip the more luxurious hotels and choose the smaller inns, lodges or pensions. Go there by car or train and save on airfare, enjoying what you see along the way. Sometimes what matters in a vacation is not the destination but the trip; not where you go but how you get there.

How to Enjoy a Kentucky Vacation During the Recession

We have been told that the country and even perhaps the whole world is today experiencing what is termed as an economic recession, if not depression. The decline in economic activity has caused companies everywhere to scale down or even close shop, so that millions of workers all over the world lost their jobs. So it is now a time for penny-pinching and vacations are out of the question. Except for Kentucky.

If you are even just thinking of going on a vacation in Kentucky, today is as good —if not better— as any other time to go there. The state offers what it got in terms of nature and locales, recession or no recession; the people in your destinations is just as hospitable, and you will get less competition for, and hopefully much better, service, because there is fewer visitors and tourists. With some imagination and simple planning, you can even save a lot in vacation expenses.

Trim your Vacation Expenses

In planning the vacation, remind yourself that a significant portion of every vacation’s budget is appropriated for accommodations and transportation. Thus if you eschew expensive hotels and stay instead in bed-and-breakfast inns, lodges or cabin, you can considerably reduce your expenses. You will use your hotel room only as a sleeping place anyway, so why be choosy? In the same manner, if you go there by rail, bus or -if near enough— by camper, rather than by air, you can trim your budget further, and enjoy the overland trip more.

Kentucky Indoors

When you get there, there are events and festivals and affairs you can go to any time of the year. For cultural and music presentations, there are the Uptown Opry every Friday in St. Whitley City; Coal Miner’s Jamboree, Saturdays in Stearns town; Country, Gospel and Bluegrass Music first and third Saturdays, Somerset and Pickin’ Jam, for bluegrass, old-folks, and country music also in Somerset Tuesdays to name a few.

And almost every month there are yard sales, flea markets, antique car show, arts and crafts festival, contests and Christmas activities to round up what you can see and enjoy indoors in Kentucky. A visit to the Bluegrass Museum will enlighten you about its history and famous musicians, and hear snatches of its evolution from the early to the latest times. You will never get bored there.

Kentucky Outdoors

Much of what Kentucky offers are in its plains and rivers and mountains. If you love outdoor sports, you will find in Kentucky opportunities and places for cave exploration, hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding. There is also good fishing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, of just basking in the sun. If you prefer, you can simply rent a luxurious (or less) houseboat, and explore any lake (three of them) at your leisure. Sunsets and sunrises on the water can be spectacular and scenic, and maybe poetic to boot.

There is a scenic train ride for sightseeing the countryside, various contests in different counties, and many other outdoor activities you can participate in or simply be a spectator of. So there is always something to do, something to see, something to enjoy in Kentucky, any time you go there. With good planning and prior arrangements, you can visit Kentucky and enjoy your vacation for less, economic depression or no.

Indiana: the Great Outdoors on a Budget

In these days of economic recession, many people will consider going on a vacation budgetary counter-productive: you spend instead of earning, and money is too tight for such. But if you think you deserve a vacation and want one but the wallet is thin, then Indiana is the place to go.

Indiana offers a great variety of outdoor activities you can enjoy with a minimum of fuzz and expense. There are trails to follow and caves to explore; rivers to float, canoe, kayak and fish; museums to visit; scenes and scapes to view; festivals to participate in, and even see Abe Lincoln’s boyhood home. And of course there is the great dining and music to experience, and shops galore to find your heart’s (and wallet’s) delights.

Camping, Fishing, Boating

Campgrounds are plenty at the Spring Mill State Park. From there you can explore the pioneer village that includes a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a distillery and tavern, to see how our pioneer forefathers lived. There are also numerous caves in the park you can explore, and a timber forest to go hiking or orienteering in.

For kayaking, canoeing and rafting enthusiasts, there is the Blue’s Canoe Livery in Columbus, Indiana. The Driftwood River where the livery is located runs through a wilderness park, so you will most probably see deer, beavers, herons, ospreys, turkeys and other wildlife as you drift along or fish for bass. Overnight camping is also available if you wish to sleep under the stars.

But if fishing is your love and passion, Indiana boasts of largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike and muskellunge fishing. Walleye, crappie, trout (rainbow, brook and brown, mostly), striped bass and bluegill are also fished in Indiana, although the state is not much noted for flyfishing. Guided fishing tours are available, and there are plenty of lakes to go to, some of which are Lake Tippecanoe/James Lake, Lake Webster, Lake Wawasee, Lake Monroe and the Geist, Brookesville and Morse Reservoirs. And then there is fishing Lake Michigan for huge salmon, and smaller rivers for catfish.

Museums of Vintage Cars

Vintage car buffs may, as an example, tour the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum, Auburn, and see the classic cars and the history of their development. The Duesenberg line was one of the famous cars in the early part of the century in terms of luxury and styling. The Raisbeck Engineering Hall of Technology, meanwhile, showcases the technologies still used in cars today, and the Cars of Indiana Gallery houses vintage cars, many not found anywhere else.

Other places of interest about cars are the Auburn Automobile Gallery, Special Interest Automobiles Gallery, Timothy Durham Gallery, Dean Kruse Gallery, and the Deusy Shop for mementos.

An Exciting Children’s Museum

If you are going on your vacation with your children, you will appreciate the Terre Haute Children’s Museum of Science and Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. Conceptualized to get children excited about science and technology, they accomplished the objective by creating interesting exhibits and giving fun and enjoyable methods of learning. Thus, the museum gets an average 15,000 visitors a year.

So indoors or outdoors, Indiana has a place for you. There is no reason why you can’t go, recession or no. To cut on expenses, avoid the luxurious hotels and go to the field. You’ll be closer to nature, too.

Things You Should Know About Airport Security Rules And How To Get Through It Without Any Hassle

It helps to plan ahead when you’re about to board a plane so you won’t be caught up with tight security issues. Security lines are unavoidable in most airports, and if you intend to get through it fast without holding a line, making things easier for yourself and other passengers, you need to be prepared and know how does the airport security work so you’ll be able to have an easier way to clear security at the airport. These simple guidelines should help:-

It’s good in most cases to have your pocket full, but when in airport security lines, this will cause a delay on your part. So if you have any loose change in your pockets, you should take them out beforehand. That goes the same thing for cell phones and wallets which should be places on the small bins the airport security provides. If you can, carry a small bag so you can place watches, belt buckles bracelets or any other type of jewellery inside before you reach the end of the line so you’ll save some time, since this will surely trigger the alarm scan.

If you’re bringing along light entertainment, a book perhaps, and maybe some light snacks, organize and tidy them up so there’s no mess that will be made in your bags.

In some airports, you are also required to take your shoes off. This might be obvious to some, but it helps to remind you that certain types of shoes can easily be worn on and off. Heavy boots or shoes with laces or zippers will make it harder to take off, thus taking up more of your time. If you have these on anyway, untie or unzip them right before you get in front of the line, as long as you don’t forget to put them back on properly later on (Or you might embarrassingly trip and fall!)

With the TSA’s rules, you must put your liquids, creams or gels in a one quart sized plastic, clear and ziplock type bag. Keep in mind that these items need to be less than 3 ounces or 100ml or less. Don’t spill any liquids in your bags for your sake. Other items which might be medicinal in nature needs to be notified to a screening officer, and in most cases if the items are allowed it’s not counted out of your plastic bag allowance.

Most people don’t give the following much thought, but you can actually have a ‘system’ where you’ll be able to put yourself back together and in orderly fashion if you put the items in the bins that goes through the screening belt it a certain order.

The things that you wear should go in first. Items like your jacket or coat and shoes, along with thing you carry like small bag for example. Since these get through the x-ray out first, you can save time and start putting them on while other belongings are being screened.

Any laptop case or bag that you’re carrying can be put in the bin ahead of the laptop itself. So that you’ll have it ready to slip in the laptop back in after screening.

After reading this, you might still wonder if it’s such a big deal to be prepared when it comes to airport screening checkpoints. The reality is that airports’ reports claim that most lines are held up and cause long lines are the result of people trying to put themselves together after the screening. You would be doing yourself and your fellow travellers a favour by keeping the above tips in mind.

You might not notice it, but who knows; you might even get a friendly nod or smile from the screening guards in acknowledgment of your travel etiquette. They might even consider you an expert in travel regardless of whether you’re a seasoned traveller or not.

Finding Deals on Accommodations for Families

If you are going on any kind of trip or vacation, inevitably you will most likely need to stay in a hotel. Although hotels can often be part of a larger package such as an all-inclusive resort, they may not always be included. Since they are a large part of the overall price of a vacation it is important to find ways to save money on your hotel accommodations.

Children under the age of eighteen now stay for free at many of the hotels around the world, so it is important to mention that you have children and how old they are. As long as they stay in your room with you, chances are you will either get a reduced rate or even a free stay for up to two children per room.

Some hotels cater directly to children, and often offer a special room that has a separate sleeping area for children, so that both children and adults have their own space within the same suite. One hotel that does this is the Nickelodeon Family Suites. They have special children’s activities and every room is equipped with a gaming system such as PlayStation 2.

The Choice Hotels International is another chain that offers accommodations for families that allow children 18 and younger to stay for free. They also offer travel discounts for groups, as well as friends and family of Little Leaguers at 15% off the regular price. You can verify with the website if they are currently offering that deal, as it may be during particular seasons, or just mention it while you are making your reservations.

Another way to find a fantastic rate is through a travel website such as Expedia, Orbitz, or Hotwire. They book rooms in large quantities to allow you to take advantage of discounted rates. Although most offer deals for the children that stay in the room with parents, it is always best to make sure that deal does not only go up to a certain age. Most consider children 18 and under, there are some who only allow children to stay for free up until 13 or 16. Disneyland hotels for example make the cut off a lot younger for children’s rates.

If you are not traveling for enjoyment, rather you are traveling because someone has passed away or is in the hospital, you can check with the local hospital to see if they have deals with nearby hotels that will allow you close proximity to the hospital at a special rate.

No matter what reason you are traveling, you should hardly ever pay full price for children in any hotel. There are many offers through travel agents, websites, and even local visitors center that will allow you to get a discount, even in the best hotels around the world.

How to travel safely as women and students

Unfortunately; women and students particularly young ones are more likely to be involved in a crime against them when travelling in Europe. They also are more likely to have problems and difficulties with certain government officials and possibly trouble with locals. So it is because of this that any women or student traveling through and in Europe should follow a few easy safety tips.

If you’re a student you are travelling to Europe there are some things you should keep in mind when you do travel. Not every person you come across can be trusted, no matter how nice they may seem at first. It pays to be a little wary of everyone you meet who you do not know. This is an important first tip; don’t give out your trust too easily and be a little wary of all people.

It always pays to learn a little of the countries language before you travel; this way if you do get into trouble you can at least understand or speak to people who don’t speak too much English. You will be able to get directions and communicate easier with the people around you. No one is saying you have to be fluent in the language; just learn as much as you can to be safer. Learn particular phrases that you may need such as, where is the police station, where is the hotel, where is the US embassy and such like.

Make sure you are up on all the laws and cultures of the country that you are visiting on your trip. Don’t go overboard with the partying and be respectful of the locals and other tourists. Don’t take drugs and try not to drink so you become drunk; you need to keep hold of your wits when you’re in a foreign country; then you won’t fall victim to crimes against you or become involved I a situation where you end up being arrested by local police.

Never walk out on your own at night; particularly if you’re a women or a young student. Always get licensed taxis if you’re on your own or if you can rent a car and use that instead. Or you could always go out in a large group so you’re never alone.

Always keep what you are carrying well hidden on your body; if your iPod or cell phone is on view; you are making yourself prime for mugging and attacking. Try and hide cash somewhere where they won’t look or won’t have time to look, such as your shoes or stuck to your frame somehow. The less it looks like you have valuables the better as you’re a less likely target. If you do get mugged or attacked; scream for help and run to closest well lit area or lit house for safety and get the police involved immediately.

The information found will include all of the details about the park, the hours and seasons in which they are open, as well as interesting facts that you can relay to your children to get them excited about going.

For example, a theme park that usually gets the children’s attention is Legoland in California. Every child loves legos, and you can experience it first hand at Legoland. The website details all the information regarding the park as well as ticket prices. Another example would be Hershey’s Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the “chocolate capital of the world.” At Hershey Park you can take in the numerous amounts of thrill rides and then end the day taking a tour through Chocolate World where your children will learn how chocolate is really made.

In almost every theme park in the United States, children will get in at a discounted price. If you have an AAA card as well you can get another discount of $10.00 per person so that you can really see the savings mount up. Almost every park allows you to buy discounted tickets somewhere, whether it is at the AAA auto club center, the visitor’s center, or even a local grocery store.

For another theme park that will really knock their socks off, you should head to Branson, Missouri. It is becoming increasingly popular for both children and adults. Silver Dollar City is a great destination to bring children to. It is a combination of amusements as well as glass blowing, candle dipping, and rope making which children really seem to take to. Of course there is also modern amusement park rides both at Silver Dollar City, as well as two other parks in Branson. The best deal to save the most money is the City Hopper Pass which can be purchased for all three parks.

Many discounts for both the City Hopper Pass as well as other theme parks can usually found online. Generally, children cost about $10.00 less than adults. The coupons can be printed online or you can find coupons locally as well. Theme parks are not only exciting but depending on the theme park you go to, they can also be unusual which really allow the children to see something new for an affordable rate.

St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland: Legends Galore!

There are a few reasons why most people in Ireland wear green on St Patrick’s Day. This is part of the celebration and is considered a tradition every year. Another tradition is that on this day you can ask people to kiss you! This day is a time of fun and being just a little bit silly. Below are some things you might want to know about this important Irish celebration.

St. Patrick is believed to have died on March 17th, and this is why that date was chosen as St. Patrick’s Day. The celebration is always held on that date.

Legend has it that St. Patrick drove away all the snakes in Ireland, however the story is just the result of people’s exaggeration. Irish people claim that there are no snakes in their country, however the story is hard to believe.

St. Patrick escaped to Britain from Ireland, and returned a priest after a number of years’ absence.

The first St. Patrick’s parade was actually held in the US (in New York) in 1762, and not in Ireland. This celebration is still a very important one for Americans.

A phrase you will hear often during the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations is ‘Erin go bragh’, which means ‘Ireland forever’.

In Ireland, it is believed that if a person kisses the Blarney stone, then they will receive the ‘gift of the gab’. This is a popular story amongst the Irish, and is therefore part of the annual celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland.

The majority of Irish people are Christian, particularly Catholic, however divorce was legalized there in 1995 following a referendum. This desire of the people to legalize divorce is quite surprising given the Christian view of marriage as being a sacred state.

One of the fun activities of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is the drinking of green beer. So try some green beer and ask people to kiss you, and have fun! You should also wear some green, or you might find that people pinch you. Don’t forget to observe the religious nature of the occasion, too, however.

There is much to learn about St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland. Have fun joining in with people as they celebrate the occasion, whether you are in Ireland or elsewhere in the world. Wear a touch of green and watch the parade which is the start of the festivities. Be part of the event and enjoy yourself together with all the other people who recognize the importance and fun of this special day.

It’s important not to forget St. Patrick himself on this day, though. Irish people always take a little time to pray and to thank the saint for having brought Christianity to their land. St. Patrick is an important part of Irish history, and thanks to the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland, and elsewhere around the world, he will not be forgotten. If you want to know more about St. Patrick or his day, then have a look at the many websites which explain the background and traditions surrounding the occasion.
